MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Power Fuel Catalyst
Just seen this on ebay - does anyone have experience of these? If it would save me faffing around with fuel substitutes it would be money well spent but it looks like it might be too good to be true. '...it looks like it might be too good to be true...' ... so probably is. Rob AIUI the 1500 has a good quality cyl head that resists valve seat recession caused by lack of tetra-ethyl lead reaonsably well. Just avoid WOT above 4K rpm. A |

Looks like the stuff that once came from Broquet. I won't recommend them. |

Looks like blobs of solder in a wire mesh. Is the petrol supposed the leach the lead out of it and pass it along to the valves? |

The classic car mag where I used to work got numerous press releases about these things (and other snake-oil devices). I used to tell them that if they got a proper test done at MIRA which showed that the thing worked, we'd run a feature on it. Still waiting to hear from them. |

I have Magic Beans for sale!! |

They're jewels, aren't they? Bling for your fuel tank. |

For goodness' sake - it's not difficult. http://www.leadedpetrol.co.uk/list.htm Fill up with leaded every few months, to top up your "protection" - and relax. |

I'm always cautious of stuff like that. The only things that improve are the seller's bank accounts. |

adds valuable (metal prices are going up) weight to the tail end quite how the various chemical compounds that make tetraethyl lead and any other additives are supposed to mysteriously be transformed from these synthesisied "snake oil" bits of magic hasnt tbeen explained. So many chemical plants all over the globe were wasting their time producing these complex chemicals when a dollop of metal in the tank would have done the same job. yeah! save your money and buy a tank and a half of U/L petrol |

If your serious about lead substitutes, then do what the uganda and tripolie airforce used to do in the war of 1812... Tie a maginet around your fuel line and solder a positive wire to the fuel line and the positive post of a 9 volt battry and a negitive wire to the maginet and the neg. side of the 9 volt battry,,, the maginet traps various kinds metalic materiaals in the fuel line with the fast rushing flow of fuel over the metal particals will cause a static electrical forcefield with the maginet, by adding a postive electrical charge to the fuel line wiich is already envoloped in the electrical magnetic force field you will in essence be creating what is know as electrloisis and actully putting a lead bi product of the electrifed metal particals back into the fuel...thus Bi-Leaded fuel. I got to tell ya, I might have to actually try that, If I didnt know any better, Id swear that could actully work prop...P*ssing the wind, and telling the world its raining lemonaid LOL. |

Bayford do a good job of keeping leaded fuel available and it's ideal for some old cars - but is it worth the money for a Spridget? Last time I looked leaded was about 20% more expensive than regular unleaded, which works out at something like £150 extra over 5000 miles. That would go a long way towards an unleaded head. |

I think it would look nice to hang 3 or 4 in the christmas tree. :) |

The previous owner of my Midget got ripped off with these things. When I was buying the car, he showed me a receipt from his garage for "fitting" these in the tank. Being a sceptic, I decided to try to fish them out. When I looked in the tank with a dentists mirror and a superbright LED.......guess what......no magic pills! Allan |

Rob, The solution is simple. Once a week drive to Alston. Its a lovely journey through upper Teasdale and when you get there you will find that the garage still sell 4 star LRP petrol. Guy |

why not just try lead dust in the fuel tank, after all they put alot of fine sand in the gas tank and the air intakes of carbs to do head porting and polishing work...as the sand works its way thur the system from intake to combustion to exhaust that fine sand particals acts like a sand blaster, and gentle smooths and polishes where ever the sand finds resistance in the system, super easy....Id imagine lead dust would do the samething... prop |
