MG Midget and Sprite Technical - progress: but what is welded to what!

Hi all,
Progress on the rusty midget is going well..
Now working on the front drivers corner..
Have cut out the triangular brace and mud guard (very rusty, paper thin in places, loads of patches.).
Have now started on the firewall/footwell, everything below a line 6 inches up from the floor is pretty nasty..
Floor and sills have been replaced by the DPO..
Anyhow the question is what is welded to what?
The foot plate (not sure of the real name) that makes the back of the triangular section in the footwell obviously welds to the floor and outer firewall, but in the edge, is it welded to the inner sill?
The car had no closing plate in the front of the sill (well I lie, there was one, made of filler!!) should there be a separate plate or does the outer firewall extend out to meet the outer sill..?
Cheers

Tim,
The "foot plate" as you call it (good name) welds to the inner sill and to the transmission tunnel, at either side.
The bulkhead in front of this extends to meet with a flange on the front vertical edge of the inner sill. There is then a filler piece which is shaped to match the curved front edge of the outer sill which closes off the box section formed by the inner and outer sills, and meets up with the bulkhead.

And a similar, differently shaped pair at the rear of the sill too

Moss catalogue is your friend for identifying these bits

Does this help - from a Heritage visit (would like to do it again)

And this is a blow up from the outside - bit grainy.

Excellent, thanks guys!
Richard, I think that a day spent photographing at heritage and then posting the pickies on the web would help all restorers (like myself) who have a part disolved car, Thanks..
Interesting to see that the footplate is only spot welded to the bulkhead (firewall) in a few places.
Now all I have to do is to make a bulkhead repair (out with the flanging tool my wife got me for Xmas!), foot plate repair and sill closing plate!

I would enjoy a trip to Heritage every year; was my best day out in 2007!!

there is a website in the States that details the day Steve and I with several other MASCers spent at BMH

but I cant find the link

It has some pictures from Steve and me on it

anyone help with a linky?

Tim,

They spot weld what they need to / can get at - further welding, especially major structural stuff is done in weld booths.
The footwell reinforcement would have a lot more mig applied than shown.

Bill,

I think I've got the link you requested

Lots of further great pics as Bill refers to.

Whats the oval bulge inside the footwell in the shot above ? I dont think I have one of those !
Dean Smith ('73 RWA)

mine has the oval indent..
Tim
PS thanks for the link, makes every thing clearer..
Notice that foot place gets some short seam welds from the inside later in the process!

hmm

I don't have the bulge either but mine is a 1966 shell

I wonder if it is to provide clearance for the clutch slave or starter motor on 1500s

Someone will soon tell us
