MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Propshaft help
Hi, Is the propshaft on a 1500 meant to come apart? ie. split the front half from the rear? I am replacing the universal joints and thought that I would grease the splines as well, but it doesn't want to part? Is there a technique to this? Thanks Kevin |

i realy am dyslectic i thought i read "props shaft help" never mind |

I was under the impression that all midget prop shafts are pretty much the same. At the back end there is a U joint that bolts up to the diff. On the front is a U joint attached to the Front Half Coupling that goes into the tranny. Only disassemble a U joint if you intend to replace it. And some of us need skilled mechanics to get those together without spilling the needle bearings. Only splines are on the Front Half Coupling where it goes into the tranny. |

Onno, You aren't the only one ;-) CC, That is true of the A-Series Spridgets, but the transmission that follows the 1500 arund terminated with a plate like unto the one on the pinion shaft of the diff. Not sure about splines, but they must have them to accomodate the movement of the axle relative to the engine. David "I will look at my spare 1500 propshaft when I get home" Lieb |

Kevin I never saw any reason to split a propshaft at the splines. I'd be inclined to use graphite powder in the splines instead of mucky grease, meself. The splines might separate by overcoming a circlip like the splines on front wheel drive driveshafts, but I dont know. I certainly won't look forwards to a later response from you that says: "bytheway, I broke my propshaft" best advice leave it alone |

I would really love a picture! All I have to go by is the Haynes that "sez" it covers all models. They show only one prop shaft and it looks like my A-series. So Haynes muffed it?? |

yup, the 1500 prop is bolted at both ends, undoing the bolts (thru the convient hole in the floor) yields you both UJ's |

There is a screw cap that holds the splined part in place, unscrew this cap and it should come apart. You may need mole grips or similar as this part has probably not been apart since the car was new! Cheers Carl |

I don't know what type the 1500 Midget propshaft spline is but I took apart one from IIRC a spitfire or herald and it was a roller spline with lots of rollers in it ready to fall out so be prepared just in case. |

Ok, thanks guys, looks like i'll leave it alone. Kevin |
