MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Propshaft to diff - how big a gap?

Just refitted rebuilt motor and recon gearbox into my '64 midget 1098.

With the propshaft pushed fully home into the transmission, there is a gap of about an inch between the diff flange and the prop flange. I'd have to pull the prop back out about an inch to mate it with the diff.

Is this right ? Any help much appreciated !

Yup, you pull the prop back out of the box to make up the gap. If there wasn't a sliding fit into the box, everytime the axle rose up relative to the car, the prop shaft would jam into the box and try to push the engine forwards off it's mounts.

Thanks. I'm feeling a bit stupid now ! Never thought of that. Never too old to learn though, as they say !
Cheers.
