MG Midget and Sprite Technical - pulley nut

hi all.
the crankshaft pulley bolt on 1098 midget.is it left or right hand thread.

thanks bob.
trebor

Its a Right hand thread. Ie anticlockwise to slacken

If you have access to such a thing, the easiest way to undo it is to use an air powered impact tool. I am always astonished how effective these things are. And you don't have to lock the crankshaft while using it.
Mike Howlett

yeah got a compressor but no impact tool. will have to get one.. better than dropping the sump like i just had to.
thanks bob.

I spent an entire day trying to undo mine with all sorts of well meaning suggestions from the forum. In the end I bought one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clarke-CEW1000-Electric-Impact-Wrench/dp/B0039BQRUOy and it came straight off! Worth every penny!

I use a china made 1/2 inch drive electric impact wrench... It works sweet....air or electric is the way to go.
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

Btw.... There is a washer tab that is bent on one side of the bolt flat.... So remember to pry it back

John Twist University motors suggests bracing a long breaker bar, (with the correct socket on the pulley nut)on the inside of the left front fender then then use the starter motor to turn the crank.

I do like John Twist, but that is a horrible way to remove the nut.

But you can't get a socket on the front crank nut on my 1275 Midget with the engine in the car. The pulley is too close to the cross member. John Twist must have been talking about the MGB.
Mike Howlett

Not sure what is wrong with that method I have been doing it for many years.

Yes you can not get a socket on the Midget pulley nut, that is why I bought a large combination spanner 34mm for the job. With a combo the ring end is offset and fits a treat. I sometimes have to leave it a little off the chassis to give it a shock.

To get at it with a air gun you need to remove the rad and lift the engine.
