MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Purveyors of Decent Exhaust System

Can anyone recommend a decent exhaust.

I'm not sure what I currently have, except to say that it's pretty much straight through, tiny back box with an even smaller box in front of it.

The manifold is an LCB type, is that the correct terminology?

I'm just looking for the straight pipe and rear box.

I suppose I should try and photograph it, any help gladly accepted.

You can see it poking out the back of the photo :-)

Thanks
Ian

Yes, per archive search, call Kim at Magic midget...

Ian,
your present tail pipe is short I'd have thought if you used the car that the chrome bumper and over ride would get tarnished

if your rear suspension is standard and if you know what size or make you manifold is you could just match it with a centre pipe and rear box of the same make or size from the usual suppliers

or you could look around for a local exhaust specialist and have them custom made and fitted

ETA: I would recommend Kim Dear too but I'm not sure if he's got what you want but you could always ask him as he's very helpful - http://magicmidget.co.uk/

David and Nigel,
I'll give Kim a call and see if he can help me.

The bumper does tarnish a little but that's how I got the car so something an inch or two longer now wouldn't be amiss.

Thanks
Ian

Also try Maniflow direct as they supply many of the specialist suppliers.
I use a large Maniflow 'across the back' silencer but without the normal small resonator box between the spring hangers of the later 1275 design - gives good clearances and sounds god without being noisy on a run.

Id think any auto parts store will sell an extension for the tail pipe and that can.solve the tarnish

But if the muffler is fine any muffler shop can install a straight pipe from the header to the muffler without issue

Ian,

try an RC40 single box from surprise, surprise Magic Midget. It makes the A series sound a lot bassier (and quite a bit louder) than normal but not too loud for longer journeys.
I fitted an LCB, which you have already with 1.5" pipework and it sounds good and helps the engine breathe a little bit better. You may need to richen the mixture a little after fitting.

Harly davidson motorcycle muffler is also a popular choice here in the usa

Another vote for Kim at Magic Midget, I too bought my maniflow system with RC40 box from him. I love the RC40 box

Whos running a harley muffler? How loud was the car? Ive got the exhaust that runs around the back to the other side, its really quite but I want to modify it so its straight out the back. The harley muffler sounds like a good idea but I dont want it stupid loud.

hi maniflow..you can speak to the man I have forgotten his name, sorry. Lots of good advice and first rate goods

Another vote for the Rc40 from me. It just fits between the spring and the tank. It sounded great with the a through it, is pretty noisy with the k! The pipe joining the manifold has to have a little kink in it.

Prop, Was that a Screamin Eagle 'silencer'.....my mate takes the baffles out of them and makes the Bad Boys even louder :)

We had a race 1380 Midget in with a suzuki race can on, made good bhp but way way too loud, lost 4 bhp with correct baffles in !

Ian,
in my opinion you need more than a couple of inches more on your tail pipe

I do wonder what the RC40 would sound like with your existing small middle box still fitted, most set ups mentioned I bet have only a pipe between the manifold and the back box and I'd guess that's how most have the RC40 fitted

from your description you've currently got twin in-line silencers one in the middle and other at the end which work together as a set

as you say both are your existing boxes are very slim so you may need to have a new centre pipe to replace the small centre box for the sound and flow of the exhaust plus as the boxes are so slim the exhaust pipe might be fitted close to the floor and other parts of the car which might mean if you try to fit a large rear box the fitting might be tight

a well shaped and fitted exhaust with adequate clearances for all conditions when driving will be totally forgotten about but one that isn't so well shaped and fitted usually throws up problems or knocks and noises so don't just think you can throw anything on

if you have a standard car with standard rear suspension and all set at about standard then an off the shelf system should fit - or a new straight pipe and rear box

My vote is for Maniflow. I've had a single box system for ages and it sounds good, seems to be efficient and only registered 82 decibels at Donington Park so not too noisey.

I tried an RC40 but found the clearances too tight - it was a long time ago and maybe the Magic Midget version is a better fit.

For a road set up, I'd choose the Maniflow manifold and the RC40 single box. However if you want to spend a little more money, Mark Turner (Ex? MGCC Midget Challenge) Racer makes a fantastic repackable silencer that really works and sounds fantastic. Very useful for those Track day events where db is a 'sensitive' issue…

I have been using Ashley exhausts for years now, both on the Midget and my Sunbeam. The midget one is big enough to walk down to do a de-coke and sounds really nice. How good it is in terms of flow and power, who-knows!

I was thinking of fitting this manifold I found in the pile of bits in the shed at the same time as fixing a leaking gasket. The outlet is 1 5/8" outside diameter. Eventually I will fit the magic midget RC40 but thought about marrying up to my standard 1098 system, any thoughts on how successful this may be?
