MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Quick wiring question

I am just tidying up the wiring on the midget. I am running some 17 amp cable to the headlights (17 amp each for dip and main), and 2 more again for the spotlights (in case I want to run 4). As I have an F/G front end I have to run earths back to a suitable point.

Question is, do I have to run similar size & quantity of earth cables to what I have used for the supply?

Thanks
Matt
Tarquin

I think you do Matt, or you won't get the full current flow through the lamps.
Guy

As only high or low beam will be on at the same time for the headlights you only need one earth return for each headlight. 17 amps at 12 volts = 200 watts so should be plenty big enough for one light.
Greg H

er, doesn't the headlight flasher have the main beam and dip on together so four lights/filiments(?)
Nigel Atkins

It does, but 17 amp earth from each light will be more than enough for both filaments on at the same time. And for times when Matt fancies a quick flash (I know what he is like!) a single 17 amp earth would be OK for both headlights X both beams.
Guy

Er, well I am running 120/85 halogens in my headlights :-/ cracking long range illumination tho.
That is a smidge over 17a in total per headlight when both are on, so I will uprate the single earth that comes with the headlight units to 17a, and run a single earth for each side.

I thought that was the case but just wanted to check.
Tarquin

He he! I used those for a while - I think mine were 120/55 but the plastic/ nylon plug in attachment for the bulbs melted and the bulbs fell out!
