MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Radiator cap

Bought a new radiator cap GRC101 7psi Long from Moss.
Driving to Treffen in Germany. Checked water half way at Amsterdam and had lost 1.5 ltrs of water. Fortunately had old cap as spare. Fitted this and water level not dropped at all after further 200 miles.
Compared the two caps and the new one is 6mm shorter hence not sealing.
So be warned - do not buy a radiator cap from Moss!!
Just find it ironic that part description actually states Long.

I have these notes:

GRC110 which is the 15lb cap for the expansion tanks on the later 1275 and 1500 x-flow radiator setups.

From MGOC website:

1275 vertical flow:
RAD CAP 7LBS LR MID VFLOW + MGAPN: GRC101

1275 & 1500 cross flow:
RAD CAP 15LBS B76>+V8+MID X>PN: GRC110

MGBHive list the later as GRC1110 but probably a typo

Mine is GRC101 for 948 mk2 Sprite vertical radiator. Right part number but part is crap!!

Ut's remarkable just how many new replacement parts are unfit for purpose - including safety critical ones - the usual suspects must know this but continue to stock and sell them; the profit margin must be staggering.

Les,

Is it marked correctly as well as being the wrong length. Fairly common for bins to be stocked with the wrong part and the pickers just grab what's in the bin.

On another part issue a neighbour has recently had 2 flexible brake hose failures, one on his Disco and one on his son's, where the flexible hose has detached from the end hose barb. I can't recall ever hearing of that happening before and neither had he or another neighbour with long experience of cars.

Cap is marked 7psi so should be correct one.
Was in a sealed bag with correct part number.
I have emailed Moss to let them know part is incorrect.

Les,

I have a DX bush like that, I ordered a DU bush from Simplybearings and received a DX bush, see image, correct packaging and part number just the wrong part in the bag. They were very good about it and sent a correct replacement out same day after I sent them the image as proof and informed the warehouse so they could check the rest of that stock.

Mine was correct part number and correct part (7psi) it was made wrong and not to spec!!

Les,

This has come up quite a few times in the past with incorrect length caps being supplied.

If you check the midget technical archives using 'Radiator caps' there are similar problems noted including references to manufacturers details etc.

Early cars need the deep cap.

6mm too short indicates wrongly labelled cap rather than wrong spec. GRC102 (early MGB) is also 7lb but 1/4" shorter than GRC101.
