MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Radiator shroud

hi,
The radiator shroud on my midget has broken free from the radiator. The rad is fine but a bit loose ! The origional fixing looks like a spot weld.I am not sure what the radiator is made of as I was thinking of MIG plug welding the shroud back onto the radiator but am not sure what the radiator is made of and whether my MIG plug weld will work.Any help gratefully received

Thanks
M Teal

What do you mean by the shroud and which radiator do you have - vertical or cross-flow?

just got the blow lamp and solder out with mine

Hi
It is a cross flow radiator and the shroud is the cowl that the rad is attached to and this is then attached to the car.Did the solder hold it as mine seems to have a mind of its own !

Thanks
M Teal

I had that same thing happen on mine Long before the aluminum custom rad I had made... but it still has held today.

what I did, was wire brush the jesus out of it, and cleaned the metal to perfection nice and shinny.

then I mixed up a batch of ((( LONG SET ))) JB weld version of 2 part epoxy slathered it in real good and thick and clamped it back togather... 2 days later un-touched, it was a permanent bond.

Id use ither permaweld or locktite, not the JB weld... you DONT want the fast set up stuff 5 minute to one hour, you want the 24 to 48 hour set up 2 part epoxy...its the only stuff that works

good luck ... Im a growing fan of this stuff, but then agian I live only 150 miles from the arkansas boarder, So I may have been infected with the red neck virus long ago.

the shroud / cowl is only attached to the crossflow rad by 4 bolts - 2 top & 2 bottom - and there should not be any other from of attachment. I'ts not clear to me what problem you are trying to fix. Maybe the top or bottom rail has broken free from the end tanks, this can be re-attached with solder or braze but it might be time for a new rad.

David,
It sounds to me as if the bolts are doing a fine job of holding the cowling to the metal strips on the top and bottom of the crossflow radiator, but that those strips have parted company with the rest of the radiator. They really are that integral and are just soldered to the end tanks IIRC.
