MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Radio Fitted At Last

I have now fitted the radio to the Sprite and I think it looks great. The speaker is under the parcel shelf, half below and half above. It hasn't made much difference to available room and sounds fine. I am using a cheapo ribbon aeriel and after testing it in various places in the the car it works best attached to the windscreen. However it is very directional, go round a bend and reception fades. There is also some ignition noise with the engine running. I do have moulded leads so assume they are suppressive. After seeing how well the radio looks I have decided to fit a proper aeriel and will be on the look out for a quality one at the NEC on Friday. Where is the recomended place for it, rear or front wing? I will want a retractable one since I do have a car cover which I occassionaly use.

You may notice the battery master switch next to the radio. This is connected to earth. I used the black wire from a pair of jump leads and found this to be nice an flexible when feeding it through. Even though I have a new loom fitted I like to disconnect the battery when the car is parked.

Nicely done Jan!
I also use a earth switch in the (LHD)driversside footwell whenever I park the car.
A little against theft but more for ease of mind that nothing electrical can go wrong, while im not present, setting the car in flames. :)

I managed to buy an aeriel at the Classic Car Show. I don't know what make it is since the box was printed in German. It is new old stock and is a nice robust, chromed brass one.

A very important point to note though is before you drilll any holes check and measure and then do it again - at least half a dozen times! I found a 1500 midget at the car show which had a aeriel in the front wing. To fit one here you need the casing to be very short or it will hit the inner wing. Mine isn't too long but to fit it I would have had to position it very close to the curved section of the wing where the horizontal face becomes vertical. The flange that sits on the body had no where near enough adjustment for the aeriel to be vertical. If I had drilled a hole in the front wing the car would now be in the body shop.

You will note that I have fitted mine in the rear wing. Even though there is more room here I have still had to position it to the rear to miss the inner wing.

Previous contributors have said a radio cannot be heard in a Spridget. I have insulated my car with Dynamat sound deadening and can listen to the radio without problems.

Dont tell them I said this but I guess them not hearing the music in their spridget is drivers-age related.
