MG Midget and Sprite Technical - rc40 twin tail pipes

Hi,
Has anyone fitted one of the rc40 back boxes with the dtm tail pipes?
Is it a simple fit and is it a straight pipe to connect LCB to box?
There are designed to fit a mini and exit in the centre of the car. Obviously, on a 1275 midget, it would exit on the left (passenger in the UK) side.
It looked very nice in the Mini Spares Centre yesterday.
Quite a bit more expensive than the original RC40 (£100) but it is stainless steel and I think the twin tailpipes would look good.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave, if the Twin pipe box is the same size as the standard RC40 box then it should fit just with about an inch either side.

I had a standard RC40 fitted for a couple of years and then decided on a Maniflow system with twin pipes and the silencer is quite a bit smaller and fits a dream. I'm not sure if they sell the silencer separately or the cost as I purchased a full system.

Thanks
Mark

And one of the RC40 for reference

Everyone hangs the RC40 slightly differently on their car. My experience is that you always have to shorten the tail pipe. I can't see any reason why the twin tail pipes wouldn't also need to be shortened. It does look neat but there will be a weight penalty so I've never purchased one but kept buying a regular RC40.

Mark, why can't you turn the RC40 90 degrees for a better fit between the fuel tank and spring?
Jack Orkin

Yeah ... I wouldnt be a fan of the later rc40, thats way to close to the ground, I like jacks idea, and mount it sideways behind the fuel tank ... similar to the 1500

I once fitted an RC40 and found that I couldn't get it to sit properly between the spring and tank, so I turned it through 90 degrees and mounted it with the long axis of the oval vertical. The only problem was that the bottom corner at the front was too low, so I hacksawed a piece off the box and got someone to plate over it. No idea what that did to the attenuation or flow characteristics, but it rarely grounded.

Found mine was too low as well through 90 degrees. Mine sits as high as I can get it between the tank and spring. The twin pipe ones are the same external size, but like Daniel I've always kept the single one, though my reasoning is it must be better for power as it's completely straight through. I had to chop and weld bits of pipe to get mine to fit properly, something that would be a pain with the SS one.

Was never truly happy with the fit of my RC40. It's very tight between spring and tank, though never had a problem with ground clearance at the back...my lowest point was lcb joint under the passenger footwell.

Now have a mani flow (single) which I'm very happy with.

Even with the raised height of the 1500 I note that my new MGOC sports exhaust silencer sits way too low - I made the brackets so that it hung almost touching the underside of the axle when the axle was at full droop. I might think about running a loop over the axle and then I could mount the silencer and the pipe much closer to the floor. Has anyone here done this? I've never liked under-slung exhausts anyway.
