MG Midget and Sprite Technical - rear bulkhead and boot floor
right, this is where im getting stressed. just spent a good few hours scraping off the waxy underseal the previous owners have just pasted on like there was no tomorrow... the cockpit side of the bulkhead needs patching but im more concerned about the inner side which is in pretty bad shape. to make things even more worse i cant get the bloody leaf spring hangers off ( i need these off for the new floorpans to go in) also, the boot floor may need alot of patching it seems :/ any advice will do nicely, joe |

Joe. It depends on what year you car is. Just what year is your car? Sandy |

Joe, Post some pictures. You may be getting worried about rusted panels that just need a good clean off and maybe some localised repairs. Or have you got big holes appearing where there shouldn't be any? This is the sort of rust that needs a bit of repair... |

Joe, I hate to be a bringer of bad news but is it possible that the car is too far gone to economically save? I had a similar problem to you when i first started working on midgets and spent a bucket load of money on new inner/outer sills, floor plans etc and it became obvious that the car was never going to be 100% right. I then spotted a 1275 rolling shell up north on eBay that i managed to grab for £250. It was 100% sorted with no rust whatsoever. A lucky find, granted, but it saved me a heap of work going forward. I simply crammed the 1500 running gear into it and away i went! |

chuck some pictures up so we can see how bad it is. Mine wasn't as bad as Guys, but also isn't 100% right. :) |

weld everything to that pop-rivetted plate and you'll be fine. |

The real problem when they are that far gone is finding anything to weld the new panels to = pop-riveted plates or otherwise! But gradually, it does begin to come together again.

guy do you recon you could pop over some time and give me your opinion ? joe |

it's difficult welding cobwebs...but that looks good Guy! |
David Cox |
Guy: that looks familiar! Nice work in the after picture. I used a very similar arrangement in the door opening when trying to align the front and rear halfs of the bugeye. Pete |

"I used a very similar arrangement in the door opening" Yes Pete, I adapted my idea for the door space adjusters from you! The thing I am always amazed at for your work is how clean the metal is on your car. Even the new steel on mine is marked and grubby and develops rust marks on the surface if left for more than a couple of days. The plan is to complete the body repairs and then get the while body tub media blasted back to bright metal - but that is still a way off in he future! |
