MG Midget and Sprite Technical - rear end and trans question

I did a rebuild on my 71 mg midget 1275. I had to pull the eng because I did not resplace the core plugs in the back and they were leaking. Got the eng back in but now when I put the trans in gear I try to turn the engine using the back wheel. However the wheel just turns freely. The drive shaft will not turn until I put the trans in neutral. I am perplexed by this. I used the back wheel to turn the eng before to get to top dead center.
I hope this discribes the situaltion clearly.

Never mind, it was a dumb question. I have both back wheels off the ground... d'oh!
