MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Hub - bearing carrier worn?

I have just has the diff rebuilt diff on my 71 midget and have just put it back in .

In doing so I noticed the bearings in the the hub carrier on one side had some movement in and out of the hub carrier so I replaced it - on inspection the bearing virtually fell out of the carrier and was quite rough on rotation.

The problem is I can press the new bearing into place by finger pressure which I assume is not a good thing. I take it he carrier is worn?

As far as I can see carriers are NCA and a second hand one might be just as bad?

Any thoughts or workarounds?

Thanks

This comes up from time to time.

Assuming the correct thickness paper gasket is used, the halfshaft flange will clamp the outer race of the bearing into the hub. In theory then, it won't move, especially if you used some bearing locktite.

But if the hub is very badly worn, it may be possible for the bearing outer race to rotate (creep around).

I recently used a SPEEDI SLEEVE to repair a journal for an oil seal, and I don't see why the same thing couldn't be done to the bearings in our hubs, to compensate for a worn hub.

I haven't looked at the sizes, but my guess is circa 25 quid to do it.

I've got a tin of shim metal, this is strips 2 1/2 inch wide by various thicknesses including 2,3,4,5,10 and 15 thou. The description on the tin states for packing and aligning bearings. The other option is bearing retainer from the likes of Loctite, I've used this to good effect on loose plain bearings in the past.

Seeing that it's just a sliding fit there is 'some stuff' to fix it
Get yourself some Loctite 660 Quickmetal Press fit repair. There's a smallish tube that will be heaps, sells for about $10 here-
Just make sure the housing and it's mating bearing surface are squeaky clean and dry, wipe a good smear around in the housing where the bearing sits and push him in ,quickly wipe off any excess and then clamp it in the vice in position with the bearing pushed hard into the housing overnight to set up--

And yes it was caused by incoorect gasket thickness not clamping the bearing properly.

Thanks - thanks to a friend I have sourced 4 spares to see which ones are best. I will get some Loctite just in case......

Mostly relieved to hear it is not uncommon and is fixable
