MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Hub Nut Replacement

Has anyone purchased new rear hub nuts and if so are they still 1 7/8 AF as original or have the measurements across the flats varied.

I think I may have a job coming up for a friend and just wondering if I may need a further large socket to tighten if the nut is replaced.

What are peoples thoughts between a socket with some metal skimmed off it to get more metal next to the thin bolt or do people prefer the plate type spanners.

Thanks

Eddie

Eddie

I had the face of me socket skimmed to get more purchase. Also had it modified to fit an MGB octagonal socket, so 2-in-1.

I may have some spare original nuts, if you need them?

No problem with nut supplies the owner of the car can handle that.

I thought the MGA had eight sided nut at 1 61/64 and the MGB had 1 5/16 hex nut on the rear hub or am I wrong never looked at the other cars.
Eddie Cairns

Oh, I see the early MGB Banjo axle was an 8 sided bolt and the later axle was the 1 5/16" 6 sided nut.

What size is the 8 sided MGB nut.
Eddie Cairns

Just checked the part number of the MGA and MGC Banjo axle hub nuts are the same.
Eddie Cairns

Yes, the same nut as MGA.

The original BMC/Churchill hub nut tool, was double-ended for midget and MGA/B.

Yes, your new rear hub nuts should still be 1 7/8 inch AF - the ones I bought recently were (cannot remember where from though).

Flat plate spanner for me. One from Sprite Parts in Australia. I remember Lawrence Slater on here using Stillsons.

I would recommend one of Malcolm Le Chevalier's gasket sets.

I went for the second of Mike's options http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MORRIS-MINOR-MG-MIGET-REAR-AXLE-HUB-BEARING-NUT-SPANNER-1-7-8-/262475206381? and it worked well for me.

I like the flat (spanner) over the socket...it has better contact and you can provide better leverage without damaging the nut.

And they are a fraction thw cost of the socket, of which the socket will be rarely used

Oh the old favourites are coming back. What is the torque specified in the manual?

I use a standard socket and never felt a need to machine it back. The only other comment I would make is remember one nut is left hand thread!
Graeme Williams

"What is the torque specified in the manual?"

I don't know, Graeme. What is it?
Dave O'Neill 2

"I use a standard socket and never felt a need to machine it back."

Some sockets have quite a bevel on them, I know mine did. That can significantly reduce the contact area on such a thin nut. Mine certainly feels a lot more secure since the bevel has been removed.
Dave O'Neill 2

I just used a normal socket too, but can see why you would want to flatten one off.

Thank you for the recommendation Mike. I currently only have full bearing kits for sale, but I have just lowered the price on them as I am trying to reduce stock.

Cheers,
Malcolm

I don't know either Dave. I think it as tight as Lawrence can get it with a pair of stilsons.
Graeme Williams

What length stilsons did he use?
Eddie Cairns

He used the ftlb set rather than the metric ones.
