MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Wheel Cylinder Part Numbers

I recently ordered replacement wheel cylinders for my 1972 midget from Moss (USA). The Moss part number was 180-385 and priced at $28.95 – I needed them in a hurry and didn’t know where else to look for them...

Anyway, when the cylinders arrived, they were still packaged in the original manufacturer’s box along with the factory part number. These are ¾ inch wheel cylinders so I Googled around using that number (i.e., that would be LW11396 shown below). The search results were interesting since it returned a LARGE number of suppliers of similar wheel cylinders and a BIG variation in prices...

I am not endorsing anyone other supplier – but I was amazed to see that some USA auto parts vendors on the Internet were listing the same part number as Delphi for about $8 each...

Looking ahead to future maintenance, I will certainly look around for alternate suppliers since I consider rear wheel cylinders to be a “consumable” item in that they might last 5 years or so then fail due to corrosion, leakage, etc.

It’s too bad that other Moss part numbers for the Midget isn't collected & stored in a “parts interchange” database. No, I’m not looking for volunteers – just food for thought!

There are several manufacturers of that wheel cylinder who reference the same part number. The product is not all identical amongst them.

You nailed that one, There really is a swing in prices from place to place even in the usaual suspects like o'rielleys, autozone, and advance auto.

Dont be afraid of the water in the pond, there are some great prices on parts in the UK, Ive bought several items in the UK and they actually ship faster then I can mail a letter across the street

Customs is easy to work with, there is a about a 3% currency fee with Credit cards, and you have to watch the currency exchange, and you have to be aware of the shipping wieght

I purchased a Frontline kit about 8 months ago, the shipping was around $150...because of all the metal, But In the end all totaled and added up it still was almost $400 cheaper then going thur minimania

also roller tipped 1.5 ratio rockers are a great buy

in the UK if the USD/GBP is around $1.45 thats a great time to start buying

In the USA/canada Only 7 interprise sells the much loved swiftune SW5-07 camshaft by itsself at around $400, if you go to the Uk you can pick up the same cam for around $175...your looking around $50 for fees and shipping
