MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Recon dampers
Does anyone know the quality of these reconditioned dampers? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-midget-Sprite-reconditioned-rear-shock-absorbers-pair-Armstrong-lever-arm-/112587990048?epid=0&hash=item1a36c46420:g:uAcAAOSwFuxZ09b5 By a chap who goes by the name of pjones 19777. Also does dampers for MGAs, Aston Martins etc. |

Hi Jeremy,
I for one will never buy reconditioned dampers. Before I knew better, I exchanged all four of mine for recon units and the ride was terrible. Upon investigation I found I had a different type of damper on each corner (i.e. the valves and springs inside them, that control the damping rate, were different in each one of the dampers). One of them had valving that must of been suitable for a van or something - the damping was rock solid. To this end, I developed my own means of refurbishing dampers and also collected a load of old units to salvage for parts. That way I know I have a good and well matched set. They are pretty easy to refurbish yourself, the only tricky bit to get hold of is the cover gasket... I have the means to CNC cut them if you ask nicely! ;-) Cheers, Malcolm |

Thanks Malcolm, I got 4 from a chap many years ago (over 20) and they seemed ok but need some work now as the ride has become a bit floaty. It may be they only need draining, flushing and refilling and foolishly I binned at least two of the originals before I knew better so have only these to work on. If it's more serious may ask you very nicely for your help with the gaskets! |
