MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Removing gearknob
At the risk of sounding like a complete berk, how does one (usually) remove a gearknob! Mine looks like the silver thing from MGOC, cannot see any grub screws, though not to say there isn't any....an added complication perhaps is that I have a type 9 5 speed fitted. |

On the type 9 the end of the gear stick is threaded so it should just twist off. |

Ed - Thanks... and yes tried that, but PO may have used Loctite! I didn't want to damage the selector forks....may give it another go |
Mark O |
it should just unscrew, you might need to be firmish about doing it but don't force it or you could strip the threads if that's not already been done and it been blue-tacced in you wont damage anything metal, grip the knob at the bottom and slightly lift it as you unscrew it if you loose the threads on the knob you can bush it and cut new threads just by screwing it back on |

I have a silver one (momo) and it has a screw on collar at the bottom. When it's undone it reveals the grub screws. When I fitted mine, I had to locktite the screws as with movement of the gear stick, they come undone in no time |

totally with the other Nigel if it has a bottom collar it depends on it's cost, obviously the less expensive ones don't have the grub screws and collar cover and just have screw on bodies - cost doesn't always relate to durability though |

Can you remove the stick from the tranny...then you can have a better look and more options to remove the knob without damage . |

Chaps It is now removed - using pipe wrench to twist! Some sort of residue on the threads - lokks like some sort of glue... Cheers for advice Mark |
