MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replace Steering rack
UK MG midget 1500 Last MOT said steering rack was worn but almost no play between turning the steering wheel and the wheels moving. 1. So how do I check for play in the steering rack? I could take it to a different garage and see what they say. Any tips on how to replace the steering rack, 2 The steering column rattles over bumps, is it easy to replace the top bush? If I have to with draw it to fit bushes do I have to remove the steering lock? Any other comments most welcome. |

I replaced mine on my '78 1500 a couple of years ago as Peugeot of all places in Lincoln (cheapest MOT) failed it along with the screen washers (didn't push hard enough!). I, like you, couldn't see any movement but changed it as I knew it hadn't been done in 20 years at least. With the new one on, including track rod ends, it was no better. Needless to say I don't use Peugeot for all 3 of my cars now. I take the Midget to a more sympathetic garage who appreciates classic cars and their 'character'. |

Let somebody else turn the steering wheel while you observe all the moving part in front. The steering rack is seated in 2 aluminium brackets. Very often the rack is ok but the rubber between rack and bracket is gone. Replace the rubber with rubber from an old bicycle tube or with silicone kit (and let it dry for a day). If the rack is shot, a new rack of the Morris Minor is the same and it is cheaper than an “original” sprite or midget. Flip |
