MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replacement Rear Springs

I replaced the rear springs on my 72 midget 2 years ago and they appear to be next to useless all ready (In reality they did about six months ago).

As I need to replace the passenger floor the spring needs to come off anyway so I am thinking of replacing them again. The last one's were purchased from swavesy.

I run the lowering blocks and spax rear end, and am contemplating buying the 1inch lowered from Moss has anyone had experience of these or can you recommend where to geta decent set from.

I anticipate more abuse now the K is being fitted so need something that willlast.

Thanks
Shaun

I would be inclined to talk to your supplier, as two years (18 months) isn't really acceptable life for leaf springs.

The rumour is that there were some very poor quality springs doing the rounds a couple of years ago, but more recent offerings are better quality...apparently!

Speak to the likes of Peter May and get the lowered springs.

Im all for lowering a car, but having seen axles roll off lowering blocks on high powered a-series cars, i can imagine the K will do it with no trouble.

I will no doubt get a load of responses from loads of people who have never had a problem, as per normal, but logical thinking will tell you you are increasing the rotational force being placed upon the spring and as such increasing the likelyhood of axle tramp and with that abuse comes the chance of components giving way.

Just go with the springs that are pre-modified or rolled to suit your desired ride height

Also remember to get longer u-bolts to accomodate the anti-tramp bars you will more than likely need when the k goes in.

Definitely not a rumour about rubbish springs - they were! We had so many through we refused to stock any more, as did others. So Yes, talk to the people you bought them from.

And yes, newer batches seem to have solved the problems.

But if you want to lower it, I'm with Peter - do it via the spring rather than lowering blocks if you can.

Better off with reset springs - the bigger the lowering block the more the springs distort under acceleration---
