MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Replacement spares
Time to see if I can find anyone who supplies replacement brushes for a 40 year old electric drill! I also discover that my multiple racks of small drawers in which I store USEFULL SMALL THINGSS no longer live up to their designation! Anything of any use has long since been, err, used, and after 50 years what now remains unused is just small bits of USELESS SMALL STUFF. |

I seem to be unable to throw anything away that is midget related. So far I have a collection of rusty buts and bolts off the car that have since been replaced with new, three pairs of cracked reversing light lenses (yes three!), the radio but without front cover so its useless, a broken fuel cap, a knackered distributor, old HT leads, ripped vinyl interior trim, knackered hood with cracked plastic and broken header rail, etc etc At least you carefully bag and label your useless stuff :) |

Chris, how many used head gaskets are you saving? I have just had a clear out and cut my stock down to the best 2 to keep, though I would have to be pretty desperate to actually fit either one. But you cannot be too careful. ;-) |

Guy, have you tried Google?
Here's what I came up with searching on the info visible on your label - (you might need to copy and paste): http://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Carbon-Brushes-Hitachi-FDV-20va-Drill-6-5x7-5x12mm/24021577456?iid=263880404564&chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=263880404564&targetid=523091048875&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9046474&poi=&campaignid=1782815643&mkgroupid=70885934802&rlsatarget=aud-498165878303:pla-523091048875&abcId=1139106&merchantid=137622911&gclid=CjwKCAjw-vjqBRA6EiwAe8TCk49ux6z5k6oELsgm-ovTwGEh7wlAsjHeBKIuoz3CzJ-b6SJqD-HlchoC7WcQAvD_BwE There were several results, some of them half this price. Thanks Colin. I got some at a local indie hardware store (it says established 1768 over the door). He had a drawer full of motor brushes and we just searched through to find some that matched. £1 each. |

I call that a Win! Well done - and lucky you for having a proper local hardware store. Oh, if only we hadn't lost all those traditional hardware stores! I can think of several in the Leamington / Warwick area where I grew up - they were real Aladdin's caves - and they've all gone! The last real 'throw-back' of a hardware store, Birches, here in Shrewsbury closed a couple of years ago. Colin |

Colin You've just reminded me of Torry's Hardware in Warwick. I discovered it when at a customer in Warwick and I needed some Araldite. I returned many times for bits and pieces, when in the area. |

Guy I'm some way behind you in Midget ownership, I have only done one head gasket change so far. So that means I just have the one knackered head gasket. :) Also in my collection I have a rusty clutch slave cylinder, dented tin clutch master, cracked quarter light frame, broken seat rails, seized brake calipers... Most of it needs to be binned, although stuff like the calipers could be refurbished. |

Dave,
Torry's was the one that sprang to mind first. A real joy to visit, and, out back, he had a fantastic selection of the sort of hardwoods it's no longer ethical to buy! Plus there was George Grenville's in the Dell in Leamington - a real 'Four Candles' sort of place, Kemp's, with two hardware shops, Russell's - one of THE original DIY shops. There was also Albert's, where I had a Saturday job, which claimed to be the Finest DIY shop in the Midlands (It was rubbish but I learnt a lot, and not necessarily all about hardware!). |
