MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ribbed gearbox identification
Hi all, I'm new to this excellent forum. I've been told there are several different types of ribcased gearboxes, how can I identify which type I've got ? Is there actually a difference between ribcased gearboxes from a Spridget / Austin A-40 / Morris minor ? Jonas Lindquist Sigtuna, Sweden |

Hi and welcome to the forum!! I have just had my gearbox reconditioned and the guy who did it told me that its an original midget box and he could tell as there were roller bearings around the shafts. The Midget box is also stronger then the Morris Minor one. He also said that it was impossible to tell which gearbox you had unless you looked inside it as they all used the same external caseing. Thanks Mark |

It's not impossible, if you can see the number that is stamped on the first motion shaft. |

Or stick it in gear and count the rev's of the input shaft to the output shaft. This won't tell you if its the A or B angle gears (both Midget) - Daves I.D. method will. R. |

I think from about '67 1275 Sprites have a reverse light switch on the remote. |

It's not unusual for Midget remotes to be fitted to Morris Minor gearboxes, though ;o) |

correct 1275 Spridget boxes have 22G229 stamped on the input shaft. I posted all the different numbers in a thread probably in the archive by now, a few weeks ago - try a search. |
