MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rivergate clutch slave alternative to a better ped

Does your clutch pedal release/activate close to the floor on your rivergate 5 speed conversion? Mine does!

I came acrooss this on-line artical a couple nights ago that said to use a Big healy clutch slave... apperantly it works good.

Anyone else have some insight on this mod. (im guessing from a healey 3000)

Prop, you can switch to a smaller diameter slave and it will move the release point up, but cause more pedal effort.

If you bought the Rivergate clutch slave its adjustable. After bleeding and adjusting its a fine piece of equipment and I never ever have to put the pedal to the metal again.
Bas Timmermans

Yes it adjustable (where it starts) but the total length of the throw is dependent on the hydraulics.

Trevor,

I love a stiff clutch peddle ...So thats a benifite to me. I hate having a dead fish under my left foot

in the link I posted they mention the (LAter) midget slave, do they mean the 1500 clutch slave you think

would that get me a higher peddle activation point... further away from the floor.

I do have the titlon set up, so I can use many differant sizes of master clutch cly... would I want to go to a bigger one...I think im currently at 1/2 inch.

I have tried and tried with that stupid push rod, I ither push the bearing into the fingers or the clutch activation is next to the floor

Im looking for 1/2 way point in the peddle movement for engagement
Prop

Mine has been adjusted as fully as it can be and still travels about 25% of the way down before I get any clutch activity. It's the way it's always been on mine even when I replaced the clutch when the new engine went in (even though there had barely been any wear after about 10k).

A bigger master and a smaller slave???

yea know after wraping my mind around it... that might work, then just fine tune it with the rivergate push rod.

curious Gary,

How much has your flywheel been resurfaced... Ive often wondered if that would make a differance, Im not sure how much a machine shop removes.. but if its been done 3-4 times ...that would certianly pull the clutch assembly closer to the engine side and further away from the piloet bearing and slave cly action

one idea I have been kicking around is having the outside edge (about 2 inches wide) on the side that mates to the trans CNC'd / milled off about (3/8" or so deep (give or take)) like a step ...in order to bring the trans closer to the internal action of the clutch assembly
Prop

So i guess the question i have now is...

which is smaller of the 2 midget slave cly.?

The 1500 or the 1275

or is there more to it ...like the length slave cly and how far it can push out the rod vs the slaves displacement of brake fluid
Prop

I think there is a 7/8" and a 3/4" for the A-series engines. Best way to be sure is take it out and measure it, and then see if there is one smaller. I think there is also a datsun truck clutch slave cylinder that is an option, but I do not know the size or the model year. Send an email to gerard of gerardsgarage.com and ask him if he can sell you a solution.
Trevor Jessie

Thanks trevor,

I appericate that

Prop,
The 1500 slave cylinder is COMPLETELY different. Trevor is correct.

Hey Prop, leave me out of your fantasies and focus on lobsters again will you!
LOL!

One thing that you may want to try before you get another slave cylinder (if you EVER get that thing running) is to adjust your slave PROPERLY!
To do this push the slave FULLY into the bore, adjust the rod until there is about 1/8" freeplay between the rod and the yoke, drive.
If it is still a problem (and you have bleed the system properly) THEN look at getting another slave but until then GET THAT THING RUNNING!!
