MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rostyle wheel paint colours

Hi all,
Doing my wheels, & was wondering what is the nearest silver colour to " standard" Rostyle silver... ..also the black. I'm assuming the black is satin back?
Halfords rattle cans or paint firm 2 pack rattle cans?
If I paint them , should I use a clear or lacquer coat as a final coat as I've never used either before?,
I'm blasting each wheel, then de-rusting and etch priming and will paint up from there.
cheers colin

Info here on restoring Rostyles:

Both relate to 14 inch MGB rims, but the principle is the same, even if the paint masks mentioned won't fit your 13 inch midget rims.

NB Rostyles were fitted to quite a few cars, so could find info on Rover, Ford etc websites too

Mike. I had an incident with the second link. When the page opened an advert somehow caused the browser (firefox) to stop, saying I had to update to the latest flash player. When I followed the link provided it downloaded a setup file which when activated from my downloads directory caused my anti-virus to kick in.

The file was called Setup.exe and it contained a Trojan Horse called MalSign.Generic.151

After the anti-virus quarantined it I had another go but this time nothing happened but there was an advert from a casino site.

I reckon the advert displayed is cycled from a selection but I think one of the adverts is from an infected website.

Best not use the second link.

The way I did my roy wheels, was to do as your doing with the prep... and that is crucial, dont scimp on the prep work, cleanliness is next to perfection

Next I got a high end silver spray paint and sprayed around the areas that gets the silver, waited about 5 days to cure then got vinyl pen stripping tape and taped over the areas that I wanted only the silver to show, then used light sand paper and scuffed the remaining silver... not sand crossing the pin strip but sanding with it

Sprayed 2 coats black ... (extremely important)>>> remove the pin stripping while the black paint is still wet... wetter the paint the better....if you do leave the V. Pen strip after the paint is dry... use a razor exacto knief and cut around the edge of the V. Pen strip before removeing

Once paint is dry... spray a big glob of silver on a sheet of glass and use a small water color brush to touch up the silver and black lines...if you remove the tape while the paint is still wet but not running, you will have good crisp clean paint lines

Id also experiment with a fairly new tape on the market called (frog... its green in color) its very expensive about $10 per roll, but is made for this type of work and it wont lift the silver off the rimms like regular blue
painters tape will

Experiment first on scrap... and find out what works and what wont

Next big point... clear coating

My experiance is telling me NO!!!

Ive done wheels 3 times... roy wheels twice, and my hurricanes once, all three times the clear coat failed badly after about a year, it yellows then flakes and then the paint starts comming off and then one day at the car wash the paint all washes off in a flash...so my next attempt is to paint with a high end paint and not clear coat/polyurathane

As to paint...nothing cheap, you want industrial grade...tractor paint, POR 15, hammerite....something that can take some abuse and not fade and become weak in heat/cold/UV-sunlight

I hope that helps

Btw... why vinyl pen strip tape?

Because it comes in various thickness, easy to apply twist and bend, removes easily and paint wont stick as easily to the surface.as if it were masking tape

They also make touch up paint with applicatores in silver also

Thanks and sorry for that. I'd better be more careful what I link to.
