MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rotary Swaps...
Hello all, For those who've done all the legwork (thanks!) is there anything on this link that would work in a 75 midget? They're in Toronto so I can just go grab one. At those prices I'm tempted to get an engine / tranny combo and just store it? I had a friend in Oregon with one. The W*nkel is much taller than the A series or Spitbearing (fire sometimes) motor. I would just buy an old RX7 that is running and swap it across. At that point if the 12a or 13b needed freshening I would do so while I have the whole thing pulled apart. With a whole donor RX7 you also get the rear end which you will need to shorten. -stefan |

The Simple answer to weather it will fit, from what Ive read and seen...IS Yes ! BUT Its going to be tight and complex esp. the newer the set-up, Your looking at alot of mod work, then with the tranny agian you will have to make the tunnel much bigger some issues to keep in mind 1st the rotory engine is an extermely dirty engine, and has problems with carbon build up, so Id definatly do a complete rebuild. next...If you do a donor car it needs to be an early one...Mmmmm 78-87 (I think) as the rear end goes from a similar rear axle, tube shocks, and springs like ours to an independent rear end set up, having said that, If you go that direction and make the right choices, you will have a car that can flat move and have massive rialiblity Have you seen this website... http://www.mgcars.org.uk/v8_conversions/midget/files/briankraus.html Another option worth looking into would be the "Toyota 4AGE" apperantly the engine is similar size the the A-series,,,In fact there is some good You tube footage of the toyota 4AGE ingine in action. I've got a 12a (bridgeported doweled, and a T04 turbo to bolt on) sitting in the garage at home for a Mazda project. I'd be surprised if it was taller than an A Series, but it's definitely wider. Gearboxes are much bigger too, especially the later turbo boxes. I guess if you were to use the standard later model intakes that sit across the engine then height might become more of an issue. Exhaust and intake are on the opposite side of the engine to an A Series. If there is some interest then I could probably take some photos at some point of the 12a compared to the A Series, and a comparison of the first gen rx7 and turbo rx7 gearboxes with a standard ribcase and a Toyota T50 box with bellhousing to suit an A Series motor? All of them are sitting on the floor in my garage at the moment. |

I have been told that a 12A will fit a Spridget well without any cutting, but that a 13B can fit with an acceptable amount of cutting. Looking at the HP numbers, it is hard to resist the 13B, so I imagine there are far more rotary Spridget projects started than ever get to completion, simply because of the HP allure of the 13B. I'd be surprised if that were the case, a 13b block is exactly the same as a 12a externally except for being 20mm longer (10mm per rotor), though maybe that 20mm makes the difference. A modified 12a will make very good power, and if they are both turbo there is negligible difference in power between the two. 13b's are more readily and cheaply available (over here at least) though, as are parts for them (new housings for 12as are NLA). The reason for using a 12a in my case is the laws over here regarding capacity to weight for engine conversions. Again, the standard manifolds on a later model 13b are quite bulky though. I can see that being an issue, but other intakes are easily available. The later gearboxes are bulkier too, but they are also interchangeable (though the later boxes are much stronger - I have a later model turbo gearbox for use behind my 12a). |

Andrew, Thats all good an interesting, But what has that got to do with Cock..., Oh yeah, thats right I forgot...LOL Seriously how complex and expensive would it be to stuff an Rx7 engine and tranny into a midget, its not exactly plug and play with all the electrics, wiring, tubing, fuel systems, enviormental exhaust junk, and vacumes trash... it just seems like it would take almost as long to build as the "Black Hole Midget Engine" Personally, Id have to do the A-series block bolted to a BMW motorcycle clyinder head that has 4 valves per combustion chamber before id go the rotory engine. Prop...16 valves are almost as confusing as a triangle shaped rotating piston. |
