MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rotisserie for midget

Hello again.

Can anyone help me with the mounting of the rotisserie I have just purchased to my Mk1 midget.

I attached it to the bolts that hold the front and rear bumpers on but this is not strong enough. The jig came with mounting brackets which are modified (bent and welded) to suit the application required.

I think I will have to attach the brackets directly to the chassis at the front somehow but how to attach it to the rear area is a problem.

Great to hear of a MkI Midget project. What are your plans for the rebuild, spec and use of the car? What do you know if its history? Is it an early car that would have had 948cc engine and front drum brakes or a later 1098cc car with front disc brakes?

Does it have a hardtop? - you can find these for sale secondhand (often described as for a MkII Sprite) the one that fits the standard side screens. I know of two that might still be for sale.

Some info on the BMC Competition Dept (‘works’) rally Mk1 Midgets: http://www.jacobsmidget.com/worksrallycars.html

Great to hear of these early cars being restored (I have a 1961 948cc Sprite MkII).

Terry Horler’s book ‘Original Sprite & Midget’ has some very useful info on spec of MkI Midgets, if you are into originality, including on paint and interior colours, what type of instruments, whether it has a dynamo powered rev counter (948cc cars), padded lower dash pad (1098cc cars - I have a spare one if you need it), an L shaped boot handle for the very earliest of the 948cc cars, Frogeye type wheels for the 948c cars and later type for the 1098cc cars. Horler has the proper changeover dates, rather than this crude summary. Worth getting a Heritage Certifcate to know your build dates and spec from the factory, as well as seeing and deciphering what might be written in crayon on the back of your dashboard.

Good luck with the project.

Cheers

I used the front tow eye/bumper mounts with a brace onto the rack mounts at the front. Then at the rear I used the bumper mounts. Completely bare shell so very light. Photos take me back to a dark time when the end looked a long way off!!

Thanks to all for your comments.

Mike - My Mk1 is a 1962 model but has got a 1275 engine and disc brakes on the front. It was badly corroded on the floor areas particularly around tha rear spring mounts. I have stipped it down and in the process of replacing spring boxes, associated parts and floor. I have replaces the front footwell area but thought putting it on a rotisserie would make it easier to do the repairs.
Once its had most of the repairs done it needs stripping of old paint and a respray.
Thanks for the contact details.

This was how I attached the rear of my shell, still allowing good access underneath. Tube inserted through the rear indicator holes, hope it helps!
