MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Running lean?
My midget 1500 is giving a few problems (among other things) with a missfire when accellerating. On low or steady throttle openings it runs smoothly, but misfires when being put under load or given some wellie. If the choke control is pulled out partially and left in that position, the engine is smooth and pulls strongly. The strange thing is that when the spark plugs are examined, they all tend to look fairly sooty as though the mixture is too rich. Any advice would be appreciated. Dave |

If nothing has been changed, for example fitting a K and N air filter which may require a richer needle, then it could be that the carb dashpots are not being damped and are rising too quickly under load, giving too much air while accelerating. Is there oil in the dashpots damper tubes, and can the dashpot pistons rise and fall cleanly when moved by hand? May well be something else, but worth a check! |
