MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Screeching clutch part 3!

Hello again,

replaced the crankshaft spigot bush - the grease method worked an absolute treat - thanks David - put the engine and gearbox back in and exactly the same problem! Doh! Bush was soaked in oil and plenty of copper ease applied.

Only happens as the clutch pedal is released on the up stroke from the floor and it squeals like a banshee. All the clutch bits are new ie thrust bearing, driven plate and cover together with a new slave cylinder and push rod. Thinking now has the thrust bearing started to fail after only 550 miles or am I missing something really obvious?

Grateful for any observations/comments/tips. I'm thinking of investing in an engine crane nd ear defenders.

I had the same problem with 2 new different thrust bearings. Didn't happen with the older one, which i decided to replace as it was part worn! Annoying!

Are you sure its not a alt. bearing, water pump going bad, bad belt....you reversed the belt when re-assembled and the belt its self is now running backawards...compared to its original direction...ect.

Thanks Matt & Prop,

it's incredibly annoying after so much effort!
Prop - new water pump, alternator and fan belt but thanks for the tip and I'll run the engine without the fan belt etc just to make sure...

Anyone had experience of the roller bearing type of clutch thrust release bearings or am I dreaming about that - thought I read it spmewhere?

Bill, Prop,

thanks again for your info and pictures.

Are they worth the extra cost over the standared item? I've heard the replecement carbon ones aren't anywhere near the quality of the originals.
Much as I don't mind taking the engine in and out, I'd rather be driving while the weather isn't that bad!
Cheers and enjoy the Bank Holiday - Prop is it Labour Day next week?

I think next week is labor day....anymore the days just run togather into one big long never ending day

I had the cARBON thing on my midget with no problems....But I only use the clutch for shifting gears only... At stop signs / lights, and general starting....I always put the car in nutral...so I think it depends on how its used....that said, I have the roller version on my 5speed, and it really is nice

for no more then it cost...id go the roller if you plan on leaving the engine in for several years with out a pull....besides most machine shops will install it on the fork for nothing or dirt cheap...less then 10 dollars

Prop,

have ordered a roller one from Peter May who tells m I'll need to remove the carbon ring on the clutch cover plate for it to fit properly - so that's Saturday sorted!

Thanks for the advice.

Hey jeramy,

Id take it to a good machine shop...takes them only 2 minutes to convert....I think you might need at least a 2 ton arbor press to set the bearing...not certian on that.

oh ...the carbon ring on the clutch cover...yes, I had to do the samething with my 5 speed....I just used a 4 inch angle grinder and cut down on top between the fingers...2 cuts and it was off....let us know what happens

Thanks Prop,

will take a few pics and I'll try the angle grinder to sort it out!
