MG Midget and Sprite Technical - seat belts
Does anyone know when seat belts became standard in a midget rather than an optional extra ? just curious |

Seat belts fitted as standard from April 1977 build as per Super Profile; Porter, page 14 http://www.austinhealeyclub.com/Bookshop/Pages/books-road-test.html and Terry Horler’s book, page 136 Original Sprite & Midget The Restorer’s Guide by Terry Horler – http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1906133336 |

If you are not carrying children, and your car was not originally fitted with seat belts, you don't have to install them. As far as I know this applies to cars registered before 1 January 1965. But if they are fitted, then it is compulsary to wear them. Also, if there are no anchor points, you shouldn't fit seat belts unless the area where they are fitted is strengthened to take the fixings. All a bit daft really considering the useless over the shoulder types fitted to early spidgets. Apart from the lap restraint, they aint much good. How many times have they slipped of my shoulder? Loads. I could have nosed my steering wheel on may occasions. lol. I suppose a full harness would be useful, but too restrictive. Can you get an inertia reel full harness? |
