MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Securing footwell carpets

Hi folks
I'm having problems with the carpet in the footwell shifting, and bunching up by the pedals.
How have other people fitted theirs? I don't really want to start drilling the pristine floor panels for press-studs, but I guess that'll probably be the way to go. Gluing would seem a possibility, but that could in the future cause problems too...
Thanks for any ideas!

Glue Velcro to the floor and carpet.
Lawrence Slater

I stuck carpet to the floor with that carpet sticky tack stuff you can get from B&Q, carpet right etc. This allows you to pull the carpet off although it does leave some residue which depends on the amount of sticky stuff you put on. Then I used a very little bit of the stuff on the back of the piece I put over the top as a throw away piece. Stops movement OK and can't see any residue on the lower carpet layer.

Also used it as a temporary hold for some pipe lagging that I put on the header rail of the hood as a seal until I can get the header rail and rubber seal sorted in the summer. Again, not to use too much. Holding fine and allows hood down without loosing foamy bits when I havn't put the folded hood cover on.

Go with Lawerence's solution. Halfords sell circular velco disks which are about 30mm dia and self adhesive. I use these to stop the door mat in the kitchen moving when our dog rushes in and they are really effective. Two or four of these per mat should do the job. The glue is strong and so is the grip but the glue is stronger so you don't rip them away from the surface each time.
G Williams (Graeme)

I had scrunching up carpet for years, then a couple of years ago I bit the bullet and drilled the floor for the proper circular press stud thingies and fitted the ring things to the carpet.

I'd say it was one of the best moves I ever made

I had glued with heavy duty carpet glue, tried carpet doeuble sided tape, all sorts of things

But now the carpet just stays where it should

Drill the rivet holes and fit the rivets into a hole with a dollop of wet paint to close off the metal of the hole

simple cure, works as if it was designed to...

You mean like this?...

That's the very chappy

Handy thumb there, would have been a crap picture without a thumb for scale effect

I have the fitted rubber mats, they never move and are easy to keep clean.
Pete Ottewell

neither my carpet or rubber overmat are held down and they don't move

Dom,
that might(?) be the answer, the rubber overmats are so heavy they might hold the carpet in place for you
Nigel Atkins

Does the velcro work on the carpet below each door or is the spray on contact adhesive the only way to go for those pieces?
Tim Lynam

I'm with Bill 1. Tried velcro and glue, neither lasted very long so I fitted the press studs. Mind you my floor couldn't be described as pristine by any stretch of the imagination but it's on the list of things to do, about 200th on the list.

I'd be hesitant to mount the footwell carpets permanently. I understand that they're intended to be removable in case they get wet.

My carpets never move or give me any trouble at all. They're in the garage. -- :)

No really, mine(footwell) are loose fit, but topped with thick heavy rubber mats, cut to the size of the footwell, which keeps them in place without glue or press studs.

I think this is, or could be, one for the list of "prefferences". Coffee or tea for you sir?
Lawrence Slater

Two methods I would suggest either get some trim press studs rivet male to the floor and fix female to carpet or some stainless small self tapping trimming screws with cups and screw into floor through carpet. Both methods allow removal for wet carpets. If you're not bothered about removing then carpet / contact spray adhesive is fine. Woolies in the uk sell all the trimming parts.

You can get everything for fitting carpet local to you at
http://www.carcarpets.co.uk in wigan .I used press studs with stainless screws.

Thanks chaps. Just found in my spares drawer a set of press stud fittings from my first Minor from about 6 yrs ago. I think they'll find a good home in the midget.

Looks to be a very good supplier Mark. Might have to make an order at some stage! At least with a Midget you don't need copious quantities - imagine re-carpeting a large people-carrier (or a large-people carrier for that matter...) :)
