MG Midget and Sprite Technical - securing the oil pump and is my head good enough
Hi all, Putting my 1275 back together. Have a couple of questions. 1) unlike the pictures in the various manuals I have the oil pump has two bolts securing it to the block and two slot headed set screws which secure the back of the pump. I have some lock straps but I am not sure they work with this setup. When I dismantled it the bolts had spring washers preventing then from undoing. 2) the head I am using got a small amount of surface rust on the head gasket surface. I have scraped it off with a razor blade and it seems pretty smooth. How do I know whether to have the head skimmed. 3) the head has exhaust valve seat inserts. Does this mean it has had an unleaded conversion. I should say the head was not nessecarly from a midget as it was in a box of bits. Thanks for any help. Tim |

Hi Tim. Before I put my 1275 back together I took a big box of parts to Peter [May] at Ombersley [not too far from "Warwickshire"] for his assessment... and he did all the machining for me too. A real gent. Advice came free, too! |

Hi David. Thanks for the suggestion. The block has been machined by coventry boring who did a lotus twincam for me a while back, so maybe I'll take the head to them for a quick look see. Cheers Tim |

I believe that is the best of the oil pumps, was standard on the late 1275 transverse cars. Two bolts with spring washers always worked just dandy. FRM |
