MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Seized brakes

Further to an earlier post concerning the penchant of a PO to stick green LHM hydrualic fluid into the brake system, I since bled it all out and replaced with DOT4.

I did believe I caught it just in time, but alas, during a quick spin on Saturday, the front offside calipers seized up solid on, and the rear drums were definitely overheating. After much hammering and forcing, eventually I got home.

I think I was too late. The LHM had done seal damage and possibly residue in the seals reacted with the DOT4, thus expanding the seal and seizing the piston.

Therefore-complete brake seal replacements all round.

2 each for each piston - 8 in total for front
New drum brake actuators - 2 in total.
New seals for the master cylinder piston

Anything else?????

check at least I'd have thought - flexihoses, pads/discs possibly, shoes/drums, brake light switch

I'd certainly consider replacing the flexi hoses, as Nigel said. They could well have been damaged and they may well have been due replacement anyway.

Assuming LHM is the root cause of my woes - and I think it most probably is, LHM fluid would not affect pads/discs/drums etc as not in contact with it - I think flexis are a different chemical composition to the seals and may be OK, and besides, even if affected a little would not be too detrimental.... but yes - worth a check at least

I think the thought is the disk and pads have been over heated....

God what a mess, id be so tempted to just ebay a complete new brake system, and NO, a little residue is a big issue, it has to be 100% dot4,

If your going to keep it..id use denatured alchol as the final clean up....professional house painting stores carry it

Id also be concerned about the moisture retention of the LHM hydro fluid

Good luck

>> LHM fluid would not affect pads/discs/drums etc as not in contact with it<< I was thinking of leaks and >>the front offside calipers seized up solid on<< but now assume you got the pads fully off the disc, however now would be a good time to thoroughly check them anyway
Nigel Atkins

Id check them for warpage...it wouldnt take.long for them to heat up to a glow

Oh boy...now we can talk about heat and wheel bearings....NOooooo!!!

Hahaha
