MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Self canceling indicators

Did all versions on midget have self cancelling indicators, or just later models?

The reason I ask is: I was building up all the gubbins onto the steering column today and couldn't figure out how, if my car has them, they were supposed to work.

The 1500 handbook refers to them being self cancelling, but also talks about the horn being on the indicator stalk, but I think my stalk is a different (earlier) sort without the horn. So maybe no self cancel feature either?

Hope this makes sense!

Cheers peeps,
Malcolm.

Mk1 Midgets weren't self cancelling, as they had a switch on the dashboard.

All column mounted switches were cancelling.

If you have the black plastic version, there should be a couple of arms, one top and one bottom. There should also be a piece on the inner column - either screwed into the column, or a big spring clip with a lug on it.

ahhhh... OK, missing a crucial bit! No. 21 I figure...

Next question... is there any requirement for them to self cancel?

no

it's the manual version of self cancelling, you cancel it yourself :D

more to the point - why were you doubting the 'good book', tut

ETA: the horn push may have been moved by a previous owner as mine was, often a lot easier than trying to figure out or repair the existing horn arrangement or perhaps formerly the parts weren't available

That'll be the one.

I've got a couple of spares in the garage.

Let me have you address and I'll pop one in the post

Hiya,

Sometimes the plastic arms get a bit worn and a well placed elastic band is needed to keep them in tension so they work properly.

Not thought about a rubber band - must try that!
I bought a beeper on ebay and at low speeds it so loud (90db) people turn to see where the noise is coming from - mind you I no longer leave the indicators on.

Nigel, no I wasn't doubting the good book. I was doubting whether my good book was applicable to the bodged mess of my car in this situation.

Yes the horn has been shifted to a button on the dash, I had figured that out already. You have reminded me that I forgot the horn wire inside the column cowl.

Dave, appreciate the offer, I will mail you later.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Funnily enough renewed the rubber band on mine yesterday, should have taken a pic!

Changed to a wooden aftermarket wheel and lost the self cancel, the two nubs on the stock wheel are absent. Suppose a refit of 2 stubby bolts might work to trip it off
