MG Midget and Sprite Technical - servo brake
I have a new servo brake on stok, and I ask myself to fit it on my midget MKI (4 drums). The kit doe not include the non return valve and the adaptator for the inlet manifold. on the Moss website: http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=18&SortOrder=32 Do I need the part N°24 or the N°27? on the manifold, there is an hole bock with metal, between the two holes for securing the heater pipe. I think it the the way to screw the adaptator, but how to do? laurent |

Sorry, but you shouldn't need a servo with drum brakes. Servos are meant for disc brakes, drum brakes have a servo action already. This is caused by the drums rotation which pulls the shoe onto the drum, disc brakes do not have this mechanical action, hence the need for a servo. Also a servo will not make the car stop faster, it just makes it easier to press the pedal down and a well maintained Spridget brake system is more then capable of handling the cars standard power without a servo. But if you have knee or leg health problems,then the servo may help. Andy |

I thought there was a problem using a servo with all-drum brakes due to the different characteristics of these compared with drums? Anyone know about this? A |

My first car was a drum braked Mini. I upgraded the front drums by fitting later dual leading edge drums and a SERVO. Yes, drums are self servo and yes a vacuum assist servo does reduce pedal effort. Yes no real issues with the Servo on drums. As an aside the issue with drums is brake fade if they are worked hard. The real question on whether or not you need a servo depends on how much time you spend in a modern and how easily you can adapt to the non-servo Spridget. My experience is that the pedal pressure on modern cars is increasingly soft (drove a hire car Skoda in the summer). I found that even my servoed Sprite felt it needed a lot of pedal pressure compared to a modern, modern. Laurent, some servos have a non-return valve built into them even though they are supplied as a kit with a non-return valve you fit into the vacuum pipe. As long as the adaptor for the inlet manifold is the correct thread it will be ok - have a look at something from an MG Metro and use a copper washer to seal it. If you haven't a fitting let me know the thread size and the pipe internal diameter and I may have something I can send you, postal strikes permitting. No 24 looks like the fitting for the servo which is normally just a barbed piece of plastic and the servo normally comes with. while No 27 looks like the fitting for the manifold. |
