MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Sheared a wheel stud.
Yesterday, I decided to renovate my front and rear rostyle wheels drivers side on my '79 1500 midget (Chrome bumper coversion) So with the drivers side jacked up and both wheels taken off, I proceeded to wire brush and clean the wheels in readiness for painting, armed with a childs set of art brushes and Hammerite silver smooth and Hammerite black smooth, I painted the wheels, a few hours later when dry, I sprayed them with clear varnish, then left them overnight, I'm quite pleased with the results. This morning while putting the wheels back on, I sheared a wheel stud, I have to somehow get the sheared stud out, my question is, where can I get a replacement stud ? and has anyone done this job before. thanks. The stud will just knock out with a punch and a good bash with a decent size hammer. The studs are available from the normal MG parts people Moss etc. |

Padrig, Front or rear wheel stud?. Standard rears come out quite easily, fronts can require removing the disc from the hub depending on the disc type. Discs with a round centre boss require removal of the disc from the hub, those with a squarish centre allow the removal of the studs without removing the disc. |

Hi David, it's the front stud. I can't remember off hand if I have a round or square centre boss, I'm awaiting a new stud before I tackle the job, I'm hoping it's the square type...:>) Thanks for the info. Padrig |

Padrig, I just noticed you mentioned you had rostyles. I would be inclined to inspect all your wheel studs for cracks and be prepared to change them all. Some years back I noticed that a rostyle wheeled car had all its studs bent inwards , due to over tightening bending the nut seats I presume, and on checking some other cars with rostyles all were the same. The one I checked showed most of the studs visibly cracked where they were bent. Make sure you use a torque wrench to do the nuts up to the correct torque. |

Yes - well worth checking other studs on same hub at least... so you can replaced any suspect ones at same time for very little extra effort. I always hold a couple of spares... A |
