Christian,
this might help - http://www.mgocspares.co.uk/acatalog/MGOC_SPARES_SYSTEMS__midget__173.html

Mark,
that isn't the right fitting used in the right location or way - I know this as that's exactly what I've got and have been using for the last 6 years, replacing them as required

I bought alternative fittings ready to change that (Mini) bobbin out but of course Sod's Law since then the current bobbin hasn't even cracked (yet)

I had a lot of trouble with my (non-standard) exhaust especially after fitting the rear damper conversion so at one time knew most of the exhaust part numbers and Halford number for the 'Mini' bobbin
Nigel Atkins

I thought that on later 1500 they fitted a bobbin as there is only 1 hole in boot floor with anchor nut on inside , that is according to moss catalogue, still cant believe it only lasted 18 months sat in the garage

picture of mates exhaust been fitted for last 12 years

Is exhaust mounting, synonymous to rear ending?
Lawrence Slater

Mark,
assuming your mate has the same 'Mini' exhaust bobbin as you and I as it's difficult for me to see in that photo, the difference between yours and your mates, apart from the more modern rubbish rubber on yours, is his is flat and yours is not flat (forgive my lack of technical terms as I don't know any) and is, like mine was, twisted so stressed

when he's not looking swap them

Prop and the Blackhole Midget

A thought that may or may not be relevant here about holes...

Just been working on this section of my car, a '76. I always thought it only had one hole for the exhaust mount. On closer inspection it did have two. A bolt had sheared off in the second hole, then sometime after that the hole/no-longer a hole has been plated over as part of some boot floor rust repair.

I think you can tell if you have one or two captive nuts by looking inside the boot?

Ok expansion tank all sorted just the exhaust to do. My boot floor has doesnt seem to have holes in it? It has a bracket but cant see how it attaches to that? I will take a pic today. This is the last job on the list then hopefully MOT time
C Carter

Could be Prop, but no particular vid comes up on that link.

Small high-jack. But might be useful. :)

Speaking of exhaust mounting bolts. On my 73 Midget I seem to have a spare stud sticking down through the boot floor.

The 2 sets of three holes are for the bumber support braces. The two in the middle are where the exhaust bracket holding the rubber bobin was mounted.

But what's the circled extra stud for? There wasn't anything bolted to it. Anybody know?

Lawrence Slater

Mine now fits better exhaust persuaded to fit better and new bobbin fitted. Now for MOT next week if i get time hopefully on road for 1st july will have to check all rubber bushes first, soon they will have to be changed every service .Re-write required of hand book Nigel LOL

Could this stud be the fitting for the earlier type straight through silencer. The silencer was held on via two rubber grommets one either side of the bracket on the silencer with a self locking nut. Its used on the frogeye but may just be a hangover on the later cars
Bob Beaumont

Hi Mark,
replacing the exhaust isn't covered in the Driver's Handbook so I don't know which book you've been looking at :)

to me, looking at your first photo, and bear in mind I'm using the same bobbin in the same way, that bobbin isn't fitted as original and possibly not in the original location

in a previous thread someone put up photos of the bobbin use - remember I'm using it the same as you so I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't use it that way
Nigel Atkins

I was joking about replacing all rubber items as part of the service
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

yes I know, so was the first line of my reply

although the way things are going changing all rubber items will be a required every 3 months service
Nigel Atkins

Gday C C this is another variation on the theme, neoprene rubber, large washers etc. HTH Rod

as long as the swing movement that might allow (subject to the number, location and type of exhaust fixings) doesn't cause the box or exhaust to knock

some installation of non-standard exhausts can be very tight in places
