MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Shroud pictures

As some of you know I had a spot of bother with my bonnet atempting to leave the the car at 70mph on the m42,the most damage was to the shroud being pushed downwards by the force of the bonnet,a good 40mm in places.
I have now removed the dash and gubbins and started to panel beat back into shape, problem is I could do with a picture of a shroud or someone close to me (kingswinford DY6)so I can have a look how much curve should be on an original shroud, pictures pref without windscreen.
Any help would be appreciated

surely the underside of your windscreen surround will give you a good idea?

You are referring to the scuttle panel that goes from the a-pillar to a-pillar?

Any help ?

When The tree limb bashed mine in I got a replacement panel (valance) ... just the top.

at the piller ends of the new panal I cut them so they would cover half way into the windshield holes and on the old valance panal I cut along the 90 degree edge about 1/2 inch back to leave a lip, and cut at the piller ends several inches before the windshild holes

I then ground the mating surface and used the long set time Jb weld to glue the thing togather and pop rivited along the rain channle where the 2 valvces over lap and several pops before the windshield holes ....I then ground the over lap edge and rivits down flat at the windsheild holes down to level...and used liquid metal (like bond but is stronger) smoothed it out, followed by bond to fill minor spots

the rivits I used where steel body rivits,,, vary flat and about as big as a nickel and freaken expensive ... about $3 each

I thought about mig welding ... But i was afraid the welds wouldnt hold as well with all the forces at work on that panal, and wasnt able to devise away to keep the thing from warping during the weld....and was really afraid of loosing all symitry and alingment if I cut the entire panal out...the glue in method worked vary well and better then I expected, no cracking, no rust, no twisting, infact I think it made that area even stronger. If you plan the cut right the windsheild legs and new rubbers will cover any flaws of the over lap...luckly I didnt have any, But Im still glad I planned for it.

Btw i mixed a LOT of JB weld glue...so it covered the entire mating surfaces where the 2 panals meet ...not just little spots

here is some of my high end cad work for where I made the cuts to th valances...yes the windshield holes are cut on an angle

On the old panal...Id use a straight cut instead of a jagged cut like in the photo...LOL

Thanks Chris
I think you are my best option,my email is rob@cornishconnectionpasty.co.uk ,if you can send me your number i will give you a call so we can arange something, thanks again.

Thanks prop for your detailed discription on how to fit a scuttle top,but i think it repairable rather than all that cutting and grinding, cheers anyway it will be good for the archives !

From your pics I still cant see if there is a flat section just infront of where the winscreen would sit or if it is a gradual curve ?
Thanks anyway, perhaps if I get stuck I could take one of those scuttles off your hands as you clearly have too many !!

Tim
Drove back today M1 then M6 "Doh",never mind thanks for the offer.

Mark,

Guy is correct - from a superb visit to see the Heritage shells being made - thanks to MGCC for organising and inviting BBS'rs.

Rob,

Would have thought the bottom internal edge of the aluminium section of the windscreen gave a reasonable contour of whats required.

Richard
Bottom section of windscreen bent,so I was not connfident in using this as a guide.
Rob Newt

Rob,

If the section is bent get a replacement screen/surround - years ago we had a slight bend in a B screen and soon after refitting a new screen it cracked.

They are very cheap and plentiful secondhand.
