MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Sill repair panels

Both ends of the nearside sill on my Sprite have gone rotten. Most of the problem is in the closing panels and I've replaced the front one and am in the process of doing the rear. However the exposed bit of the sill at both ends, i.e. the bit beyond the inner sill, has gone a bit lacy, especially the wheelarch bit.

It certainly doesn't warrant sill replacement but nobody seems to do a repair panel for this bit, does anyone know otherwise?

Or does anyone have a sill they have used one end of and not the other.

Hi Jeremy,

I don’t think I have seen that type of repair panel before.

If the closing section has gone I would be amazed if there wasn’t more rust damage further along the sills.

If you’re lucky then I can see why you’d only need that end section. I’ve had a quick look on eBay and there are plenty of outer sills going cheap which you can cut to fit.

My blog might help you with the repair work

I guess that since the sills are basically a flat bit of steel, with straight edges and simple 90 degree folds, it is so easy to make patch panels that it isnt worth anyone manufacturing repair sections. Even that curve at the front end of the sill can be made around a simple wooden former with a vice and hammer.

I have bought very few panels, and as they never fitted well I have for the last 35 years made my own. Not difficult if you make card dummies first.
