MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Sill trims
Hi all I'm considering fitting the stainless steel sill trims to my 1979/71 midget as per original spec. (garage managed to spill brake fluid in the engine bay causing it to dribble over the sill thus removing paint!) It would therefore seem a sensible fix to repaint the sills black, and mask the join with the strips. The parts illustrations show bolts holding the ends in place, with riveted clips in between. Has anyone experience of fitting these? The sills look to be enclosed boxes, so it would mean drilling large holes to access the interior to fit the nuts, or have extra long bolts going all the way through both sides, as far as I can see. Please can anyone advise me? (The sills are presently un-holed!) Thanks, Dom. |

Dom What I did with with my sill Trim was I filled the hollow trim with double stick foam tape then I used Black double sided auto trim tape and stuck it to the trim and then the trim to the car The reason for the foam tape in the hollow trim was it stuck very well and gave alot better adhision to the auto trim tape then just the auto trim tape to just the trim without the foam to help stick to it. The draw back...the sill trim is never comming off without tearing the sill metal to shards and shreapnel Prop |

personally I repaint body colour and not fit trims, it's been decades since most of our cars have been anywhere near original and when they were original the owners would have altered them Dave O'Neill's got a few gallons of 4* if you want originality, it's from the 1990s really but we'll all keep quiet about that your car mate and you can have it how you want it especially as it's a unique 1979/71 model :D |

I fitted trim pop rivets mainly ends have bolts access in wheel arches sills where supposed to be satin but came out a bit glossy

If I remember yes there were plate nuts at both ends just accessible where the sills extend in to the arches. I remember feeling bad drilling a load of rivet holes in the nice new sills at the time for the clips and then when I thumped the sill trim on with the palm of my hand I flattened it slightly . Next car I just painted the sills body colour. |

Thanks for the comments chaps! Good, you spotted the deliberate mistake Nigel (uttered in my most convincing [least unconvincing?] "Captain Mainwaring" voice) I just felt that trying to match the blue would be somewhat difficult, easier to paint the contrasting black maybe. |
