MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Single HS6 on a 1500

Afternoon,

Perhaps one for those in the US of A. But has anyone ever run a single HS6 carb on a 1500? My thoughts for are...

1. I sort of need a new inlet manifold so buying a single carb manifold is an option.
2. I get cold feet reading the stories about setting up two carbs and getting them working properly together. Therefore single carb is easier to set up and keep working correctly. A well set up HS6 is better than a poorly set up twin HS4.
3. It is mentioned in the Sprite and midget tuning book as a good replacement for a single 1.5 inch ZS carb (in the US) but details are sparse.
4. 1275cc guys like to run single HIF44 (same size as HS6 right?) and have great success, so why not do similar on a 1500.

Against...

1. Will it restrict power?
2. Getting the right needle will probably just be guess work.
3. Cost of various new bits, including carb, air filter etc. and getting them all to fit together and linked up.

Is this just another idea I should forget about? Or is there some positives to be had here? Discuss...

Cheers :-)

If you want easy get a weber.

No endless fiddeling with needles
No oil to top up
No wearing parts

Just get the right chokes jets and emulsion tubes once and you are set for life!

And a snip at only £600 ;-)

Yeah, considered it as a possible future upgrade. But at the moment the focus is getting the car going in a cost and effort effective manner.

This is all just thoughts at the moment. Still a lack of bodyshell to screw all this into! ha ha. But I am working on that as fast as I can. I now have a deffinate deffinate deadline. I'm getting married in April next year...

I've got a 40 you can have for beer tokens and postage then you just need a manifold (only have a spare one for an A-series)
Or just watch flebay and remember a rebuild kit is cheap.

Non of this stuff is expensive as long as you know where to look
Onno K

Are you sure Onno? It is an incredibly generous offer and I would be very tempeted. Even with postage from the continent it would be loads cheaper than the average cost of a Weber on ebay.

From what I have read a 40 would work well too. I am not building a full on screamer race engine so I don't think I would realise the full potential of a 45.

Actually, doing some more reading wondering if a 40 would be enough. Might try it anyway! :-D

Malcolm, you may find that the smaller 40mm choke would result in a higher velocity of the fuel/air mixture flow and at least in part compensate for the slight undersize.
Guy Weller

Only if you will use it otherwise it will stay in the parts bin.
I won't be able to get it for about a week because it is not at my home now.

Well, more reading, Weber do a conversion kit for Midget/Spit using one 40. And I have found some basic settings for a 1500 single 40 setup so I am going to take that as confirmation it will work!

I will drop you a mail, thanks Onno. Exciting about having one of those posh Weber thingies!

Cheers,
Malcolm.

Is it true, in part because of the velocity that Guy mentioned, that the smaller carb will perform somewhat better than the larger up to the limit of it's ability to flow? So, if you typically didn't run over 4500 rpm (for example) the smaller carb might be the better choice?

yepp ... the 40 will be more torquey with a little less top end speed and HP,....but how often do you really drive in the top end range compared to pulling away from stop lights

for better tuning... get a wide band 4-5 wire O2 sensor and stick it into the exhauste collector that leads the the tubes into one pipe, then get a Air/Fuel gauge (esp the ones with red yellow green flasher led lights) and hook it up to the O2 sensor

then it will be super easy to tune your engine... and a flashing light show as you drive around town is vanity cool...cost??? hmmm, $50, ....$200 for a really nice top end set up

Onno, that is very generous of you, or beer is super expensive... :-)
