MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Sliding

Well I think I've worked out why my second (better condition) midget (1500) is tail happy in the wet. It's a little better in the dry, then I have to try harder to make the back end let go, but in the wet especially on low speed round-a-bouts if I breathe heavy on the throttle I'm drifting :D

I think it's the combination of skinny 145 tyres, the torque of the good engine in this one (LCB, K&N and a recent rebuild by the looks) and the fact it's been debumpered yet still has standard springs on the back...

Not enough preload on the springs to make them as compliant as standard...or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Do you have an ARB? and what size?

how old are the tyres?
Rob Armstrong

I was going to ask the same question as Rob.

Also, what brand(s) are the tyres?
Dave O'Neill 2

Flip there's a standard size ARB, looking to upgrade soon.

No idea on both counts for the tyres. They have decent amount of tread on, I'll go look and try see how hard they are. I need some Yokohama a032r's in 13x145 :D

They are Courier Driver, the car equivalent of Chipped Chip in the motorbike world I assume. Compound doesn't seem over hard.
J White

Courier driver? lol. get them changed. Might even be trailer/ van tyres with a name like that.

I had some 'new' Michelins which turned out to be 10 years old! They were unworn but as hard as the hobs of hell and the car hopped on any slight bump, scary. Transformed once new Pirellis were fitted.
Jeremy Tickle

I think I'll have to slide them to destruction as a worthy excuse to replace them, should be easy the wet weather outside right now :D

The date that the tyre was made is stamped on the side. It tells you the month and year of manufacture.
Bernie Higginson

Thinking might be in a similar situation, my tyres are brabus or something. Haven't checked the date yet though! I looked at my rear axle and the spring pads are well knackered so IV got a full pioly bush kit to replace. Apparently if the rear axle can move in the slightest, it makes handling interesting. Think that's what's going on with mine.
Karl Bielby

Courier by the way is a cheap brand of Pirelli.

Someday when i put in the rx7 rear axle assembly im going to add ladder bars to the rear axle as an addition to the pan hard rod ..

.also im seriously thinking of having some new leaf springs made in a dove tail design to take out any clearance issues with the inside of the tire rubber contacting the leafs

and ive already got adjustable tube shocks for the rear

ive got some rose hymn joint rods that ill make a mount for and connect from the leaf spring pearch and the front leafspring bracket ... to make as a ladder bar set up... that way the ladder bar is fully and easily adjustable...just put some boots on it to keep out the dirt
