MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Slow Wipers
Were midget wipers really that slow or do i need to strip and clean the whole system or is a new wiper motor needed. Cheers Wayne. |

They are not super fast but O.K. The problem very often is the grease in the rack tubes / wiper boxes / motor gearbox etc gets old and dried out. If stripped and replaced this often restores performance to standard again. If you open up the motor remove the big cog wheel and lube up the spindle bearing also, then bench test the motor before refitting. You don't have to remove the steel rack pipes, remove the wiper arms first !, then remove the wiper motor and withdraw the rack wire from the tube. Access to the wiper boxes is limited with dash in place however, so may try just the rack wire with new grease first and operate by hand to test. R. |

Richard is right - I found it was 30 odd years worth of old grease which had solidified. Once removed and regreased made for a much speedier set of wipers. Jeremy |
