MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Small drilling/machining job
Evening all. Hope we are all well. Does anyone here have a pillar drill and set of imperial reamers? I have a small job I would like to get done. Ordinarily I would just buy the tools and do it myself, but I am moving house in a couple of weeks, so trying to be good and not spend money. We have to buy boring stuff like a fridge freezer, cooker etc. Boo! What I am trying to do is enlarge the hole in a set of 1500 rockers from 9/16" to 11/16". So it would require drilling them out to 43/64" (17 mm) then reaming to 11/16". Would happily pay beer money and postage of the bits. Cheers, Malcolm |

Malc You got ghost falling you around or do you just love the exercise of workout by way of moving all the time. Haha... good luck on that, i got one more move in my bones and thats it... om thinking the kaymen islands ...steven devine says he knows a guy that knows a guy that can get me a good deal on a burial at sea when the day comes Prop |

Malcolm, I can do that for you if you want to send them to me at work I can turn them around fairly quickly, will need to check if I have an 11/16" reamer though. |

Malcolm, Is this a rocker rebush job? If so I expect you'll be needing the bushes reamed after fitting as well if using steel backed bronze bushes, 9/16" reamer? Some other types of bush are presized and may need no clean-up. |

RE Martyn: Cheers, could you drop me an email on malcolmlechevalier at gmail dot com? RE David: yes, looking to rebush. The rockers in my engine aren't bad, but I have a new shaft and a set of VERY worn rockers kicking about so thought I would refurbish them. I bought some oil filled bronze bushes of correct size for approx £1 per bush. Yet the big boys charge £10+ per bushed rocker! I will make an assessment about reaming once the bushes are installed in the rockers. RE Prop: Yeah, wifey and I have had a bit of an upheaval over the past 18 months, but this move should be a bit more permanent as we are buying a place rather than renting. Cheers, Malcolm |

Well done Malc. And congrats Is the wifey going to let you keep the midget once she has the 1st kid Send us pics of the new mansion palace Prop |

She is more against kids than I am! Although I think once we have moved she might get a bit more nesty and broody! I have been told that four cars is too many (two "normal" cars for our commutes, the Midget and a project MG B). But they are all, of course, required. Are you back from exile now Prop? :-D Malc. |

Malcolm, It may be a bit more involved than you think. If I was rebushing worn rockers I would bore or use a milling cutter to cut the hole larger and to the correct centre as otherwise the drill will follow the wrong centre. Then you can drill and ream to size or just bore to reaming size and ream. The sintered bushes are pre-sized so you should be OK if the hole is reamed correctly but my choice would have been steel back bronze bushes which normally have to be reamed after installation. |
David Billington |
Interesting, thanks David. What would be the advantage of using a steel backed bush over a plain bronze? Malcolm. |
Malcolm Le Chevalier |
I was thinking that they have a higher load carrying capacity. It should be possible to get the design data sheets and check. |

Id think the bronze would be to soft for that type of stress amd clearance For the most part im back in civil polite socity Prop |
