MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Small rust hole
Cut out more rot on the passenger side
|
Kevin Stevens |
Kevin, I have seen a number of unorthodox methods of rust repair, but this is the first time I have seen anyone use bricks & mortar. I'm sure it won't rust, but a bit heavy I would have thought. Charley |

That is a good looking optical illusion It took me a few minutes to detect what was what |

Blimey Kevin. That looks just like the nearside of my midget project, apart from the fact that I managed to save the spring mounts. I've fitted a new floor and sorted the heel board but, like you, I still have the inner wing to repair. I'm two and a half years into a one year job, with still no end in sight.LOL. Keep the faith! We'll get there in the end. |

Gez Memories, and nightmares... hang in there guys, it really is worth it in the end...you just have to keep plugging away at it one hammer blow at a time Prop |

Thanks for the encouragement. Did have a 2 year time frame but that is flexible,, now i know whats involved the other side should be quicker as its not as bad ,,, |

I guess it's hands up time. Yesterday, while working on the Midget in the nearside A post area, I, having previously fitted a new lower hinge plate, tack welded in the A post cover to get the front wing alignment right, before fully welding the cover. After a bit of adjustment I reckoned I had it just about spot on. So, now to line the door up. WHOOPS! I'd taken out the top hinge captive plate from the A post cage to paint inside the cage, and left it out. Doh! So I had to do it all over again, which meant that I didn't have time to do the door alignment. That will have to wait till tomorrow. Good job I noticed it before I fully welded it in. I hope this may serve as a warning to others to check and recheck before final fitting. What a Wally! |

Did it eat 3 weetabix? |
Lawrence Slater |
I did as i need the box for a template |

Coming on. One small piece at a time and it is surprisingly satisfying as it gradually builds back up to a complete job. Nice progress Kevin. |

Wheatabix... Somewhere tonight a rust bunny will go to bed hungry I wounder if microwave extra buttery pop corn would make a good rust preventer Nice job, |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
I made the pop corn comment in jest, but... you know thats a thought I wonder if you did make.up a big batch of just straight pop corn, dry, no additives ... I bet that would absorb alot of moisture and keep the car from minor rust over the winter while sitting in storage.. as long as you keep the mice out Prop |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
Prop, what you're describing (straight dry popcorn) is already used for eco-friendly packaging. I think you might be onto something as a moisture absorber. On the other hand I was reminded of one of Jeremy Idiot Clarkson's shows where he had a chunk of the heat shield material from the space shuttle set up in a clamp. I wish I could find it on YouTube. He attacked it with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch (AKA "gas-axe"; also known as a 1/2" BOC spanner haha) and after about a minute it started spalling and spitting bits of red-hot debris crap all over the bench. Then he tried the same experiment with a pizza. The pizza just sat there and took it. No damage, other than getting a bit overcooked. Why don't NASA just call Domino's when they need a heat shield? $100 for one the right size maybe? Instead of $millions they spend right now. Just a bit of a giggle. Haha. |
