MG Midget and Sprite Technical - smoothcase gearbox

Hello,
A friend has got problems with his smoothcase gearbox (midget 948cc).
Impossible to change the gear from first to second. when hot. He ust stop the car for this.
But he can downgear from 3rd to second with no major fault.
Every other gears run great.
Any idea?
