MG Midget and Sprite Technical - snail heater bracket.
hi all, my midget didnt have a heater from new but when i bought the car in bits the previous owner supplied me with a s/hand one for me to fit. have it fitted and working ok, but the motor part does not seem to line up with the indentation in the bodywork. the bracket on it looks original so were there different types of bracket to throw it over a bit.its about 2-3 inches out. regards bob. |

Your on the wrong site We are an mg midget AH sprite 1960s to 1979 web forum Im not sure what non spridget car you have Prop |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
you been drinking prop.? |
bob taylor |
I wish I was... its a good day to start. Sorry I came off crass... not intended. The photo dosnt look anything spridget |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
no problem prop, view vehicle profile . thats what its there for :) :) :) :) its a 65 mk2. cheers bob. |

There should be a heater shelf dead center of car in front of fire wall on the front side of the shelf there is a long oval cut out that the smith heater box bolts onto and the fan bolts into the box... On the back side of the shelf is where the battry is located On yours it appears.the fan motor is connected to "A" hole in the engine bay Any chance the PO did his own modification I think all midgets came with the capability of a heater.... some in wierd parts of earth just needed the heater.box over the oval hole....but im very vague on that historical detail Prop |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
Sorry BOB, I think something is a miss....I pulled up a 1965 mg midget mk2 engine bay and it dosnt look like your situation....not sure what I can offer Its several photos down towards the end http://chequeredflag.ebizautos.mobi/detail-1965-mg-midget-used-8995965.html?photolist=true |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
Wow... thats just wierd In the photos... it looks like the fan motors are in the same place With the red car the motor appears to be an albow to the right into the heater box On yours it appears.the fan motor fits into a hole in the engine bay But I dont know why there would be a hole into the engine bay body work for the fan motor. Im looking forward to seeing what others say Prop |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
ok prop, thanks for your time. uploaded image for you to see.mines just the same as what you pulled up but the snail part of the heater with the motor in needs to go 2-3 inches to the left on mine so that it fits in the shape of the bulkhead.the bracket on mine does not allow this thats why i was wondering if there were different brackets. perhaps the one i have came from different car. they probably were used on others. if you look at red car, the pipe between heater and snail is longer than mine. regards bob. |
bob taylor |
Well bob, Like I said, today is a great day to start drinking if you havent started yet...haha It could well be just a later model fan Worst case senerio you coud make an adaptor plate out of some plywood and water proof it and.paint it....like I said last resort worst case Well good luck with that....the only thing I can figure for the hole that the fan fits into is for recirculation ... redrawing warm air out of the POST heater cockpit duck work and back into the PRE heater duck work to be recirculated Prop |

hi prop. as it happens im on my 5th bottle of bud, usual this time of day. but prop i dont know how many youve had, but where have you got the idea of my fan sitting in a hole, i said an indentation which is like a dent if you like, so is that a different meaning where you come from.hurry up and get this sorted as im drinking more as this goes on. hahaha. bob. |
bob taylor |
Is the half-egg dent intended to allow for fit of the snail? I didn't realise that. I often wondered what it was for though as it seems to persist throughout the model range, even those fitted with the later style heaters. My '71 has it too. Is it on 1500 shells too? - I forget if mine had it. |

Bob I have two brackets on my MKii. I will try to get a couple of photos up this evening. |
Tony Brough |
guy, its different on the 1500s, fan all incorperated in heater, not seperate. bob. tony, thanks. |
bob taylor |
Bob, yes I know that bit Bob ( I had a 1500 for 10 years). What I was wondering about - as I couldn't recall, is whether the 1500 has the egg shaped depression in the top of the footwell |
Guy W |
guy, just sold my 1500 but pretty sure it doesnt have it. |
bob taylor |
This is picture of how mine was before I started with the front bracket in place. On the left hand side as you look at it it has a cutaway that goes around where the accelerator cable comes back through the floor. I'll try to fine a view from the rear with the other bracket and the oval dip |
Tony Brough |
Here is the view from the rear with the front bracket loosened and moved to words the front of the car. Hope these help |
Tony Brough |
OMG....IM A RETARD, How did that happen...hahaha Bob you must have thought I had completely went over the edge....good lord !!! In your 1st photo what I was calling a hole is actually an electrical box of some type, now thats just sad when you dont know an electrical box from a hole ... Now im kind of conserned that this woman I meet the other night may have an electrical box also instead of an "um hmm"....she did have a nice bushy mustache...lol Gez it has to be 5 o clock somewhere Truely sorry bob, im gonning to blame this one on my phone....hahaha Prop |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
tony, thanks very much for the photos, they will help. prop, looking back at that photo i can see how you thought it might be a hole. but more importantly please make sure that the hole on the woman you met the other night is correct or you might get problems. hahaha regards bob. |
bob taylor |
Hahaha... yepp its been awhile, but.I dont remember women having any electrical cables around there plumbing I may have to take a pass, just to avoid any akward confusing moments Prop |
Prop and the Blackhole Midget |
Guy the 1500 doesn't have the depression for the motor Dave |
Dave Pratt |
Bob 1275s with separate master cylinders used a different bracket to move the heater clear of the clutch m/c. That looks to be what you have. |
Dave O'Neill2 |
ah that explains it, well done dave. thanks. any idea where i could get one. regards bob. |
bob taylor |
David Smith has more than likely got one. I may have one somewhere in the garage, but it is a question of where! |
Dave O'Neill2 |
have you tried Ashley Hinton? he remanufactures a whole load of heater parts. |
Bob Beaumont |
'fraid not, at the moment. Annoyingly I chucked a broken snail heater away about a month ago. |
David Smith |
There was no reason on the 1500 to retain the egg shape. But that didn't of itself mean that they didn't! My 71 Sprite has the egg depression which is a relict then as it has the later all in one motor/ heater unit. I often wondered what the depression was for. And now I know! |
Guy W |
Bob, you are correct in that it should fit in the indent and if you find a bracket you will also need the tube with the air flap that fits between the heater box and the flexible pipe (you can see it on Tony's photo) or a longer fexible pipe if you have the flap at the front of the car. Don't know where you can get a bracket but would have thought the easy answer is to make one yourself. Trev |
T Mason |
hi trev, yes all i would need is a longer tube. my flap in on the front of the snail. bob. trev did you get the handle for your quarterlight in the end. i spoke to you at the billericay car show. |
bob taylor |
Bob, Let me know if I can help, as I've just removed my "snail" this morning. Drop me a line if you want more pics and/or mesurements. the"dot"brunts"at"wanadoo"dot"fr Graham '65 Mk II |
Graham |
Hi Bob (yes I remember speaking to you at the Billericay show), glad Graham has got his in bits as I was going to suggest I could remove mine and measure it but it's a bit of a pain to remove if you don't need to. Been a bit busy lately so catch is still on the to do list along with several other things that were supposed to get done this winter. Trev |
