MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Solid spacers in a diff? Will it solve my problem
Hello again all, The eternal struggle for more knowledge in the spridget field goes on! I have a '79 1500 midget, my housemate a '78 1500, about 6 months agow we had to swap the 3.7 diff out of the '78 one for a 3.9 as there was heavy vibration around the 50mph mark. On inspection we spotted the flange in the diff was no longer rotating true (a gap of up to 3mm between flange and diff casing would appear/disappear through 1 rotation. Replacement of the diff solved the vibration. I have read through the archives and see that this is sometimes attributed to uj problems but they seem fine! Now the same thing is happening to my '79, vibration isn't as bad as on the other one yet but there is defineite movement between diff casing and flange through 1 rotation. I do have a spare 3.9 diff which i'm sure would solve the problem at least for a while but then i've got £400's worth of useless diff! Does anyone know if this could be failiure of the collapsible spacer and if fitting the more permanent solid spacer could resurect this pair of 3.7 diffs and stop the problem from occuring again? Or am I completely on the wrong track? Thanks in advance Dave |

I have never had that sort of problem but I would suspect your driveshaft and U joints long before the differential. FYI . I have been rebuilding English cars MG-Healey Jags since 1980 and have never had that sort of problem. Sandy |

There is a pressed steel collar on the diff flange which could easily be distorted, giving the impression of runout of the flange. As Sandy says, unlikely to be a diff problem. |
