MG Midget and Sprite Technical - solid state fuel pumps

1971 1275 Mk111

I had a breakdown over the weekend due to the fuel pump.
over the past few weeks the engine has cut out but started almost immediately, often before coming to a halt. I thought it was ignition, but could never find a fault, but on Sunday the engine cut out and would not start, which I found a lack of fuel. After waiting about 15 mins the pump started working and I drove home. On removing the pump all I could find was a badly corroded earth connection.
I thought the solid state pumps electrically either worked or didn't, has anyone had a problem with them or is the bad earth my problem. All cleaned up and appears to be working OK now. Any advice welcome before I use the car again.

Bad earth would not be a good thing! No current or very low current flow, no pump action. Poor earths often cause intermittent faults, all you can do is try it and see if the pump now functions correctly,

I fitted a second back up pump, after a terrible experience on the M25, (don,t ask). I got the idea from Dave DuBois web site, although this quotes the "B".
I obtained a Facet square cube pump, and fitted in series with the SU. It took a lot of thinking before I could get a good position, as the inlet has to be below the outlet. (if I remember correctly).

I fitted it before the SU, as in the photo. Wired up to a Two way switch, so that both pumps can,t run at the same time, it works perfectly, and the engine will run quite happily on either pump.

>>On removing the pump all I could find was a badly corroded earth connection<< when refitting may sure this can't happen again on any connections, check all connections are clean, secure and protected - that applies to the wires too
