MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Spare wheel mount on boot
Seem to remember some time ago someone was trying to make a suitable spare wheel mount on the boot lid - lower mounting than a luggage rack. Possibly glass fibre ? cannot remember - did it ever get sorted ? I've got a spare boot lid and would like to mount the wheel outside for taking car touring abroad. Richard. |

when i did this 20 years ago, i just removed the boot badge, drilled a hole put a plate inside and bolted the wheel on (with a piece of foam between tyre and paint). the last time this was discussed, someone suggested making a frame between the rear bumpers(split type) and moving the numberplate onto the wheel. A photo of one from spridget 50 was shown -- if I do it again,i'll do it that way |

Richard. I think I have a boot lid that was done professionally some time ago, I had it up for sale at the last MG Stoneleigh show. Mail me off board if interested. I think the fiberglass one you mentioned was something to do with Clive Berry (Warks), perhaps he'll pick up on this thread. Mark. |

As popular as this modification is, we need to see if clive would be intrested in allowing it to be put on the midget wikii site Prop |

Mark, Checked the archives and it was Clive Berry who had a moulded fixing - not picked up on thread as yet. Thanks for the offer - I have recently obtained a good spare lid and will give it a try first - may well be back to you. Does anybody have any pics of fixing brackets etc ? Thanks Richard. |

hello being the custodian of virtually every "Enjoying MG" magazine from the late seventies [don't ask..] there is a letter about this from a 1985 issue which descibes the use of a spare wheel holder plate that can be affixed to the boot lid as required. Contact me off board if you want a copy scanned and sent. kosiceax913 at blueyonder dot co dot uk |

Hi folks, just found the thread. Piccies of boot mount attached. The prototype moulding was in use for over ten thousand miles on the back of my Midget. It is profiled to the contours of the boot lid and tapered to accept spoke, steel or alloy wheels. It also locks in place for security. The over-shoulder view, and via the rear view mirrror is barely interupted with a Rostyle. Alloys sit higher but still much lower than when strapped to a rack. If there was enough interest, I would further develop the boot mount for production. |
