MG Midget and Sprite Technical - sparking plugs
hello all Well I finally fired up my midget after its 30 year sojourn in suspended animation in boxes. What I have now is a nice example of an original bodied GAN4 car with lots of nicely patinated chrome and period trim and seats etc etc. After careful assembly it started first time but I have a query about the sparking plugs during running in: Haynes suggests that an oily deposit is not unexpected during running in. What is the concensus out there? Thanks as ever! |

It's been my experience that after a rebuild, plugs will have a bit of oiling, not a lot, but a bit. When first cranked, you'll have some some blue oil smoke and will continue for a short period of time until the rings properly seat in. I consider the break in period to be 500 to 1000 miles, after which, I re-torque the cylinder head bolts (even with cast iron heads), re-adjust the valves & replace the spark plugs. I've never had a problem when following this procedure. Dave |

Thanks Dave! Others will be along with their sixpen'th soon I expect! |
